Bangladesh has no roaming agreement with any country — there is no India-Bangladesh bilateral despite the shared border, no SAARC framework, and no European, US or Gulf carrier extends home rates here. Standard international roaming applies, and a travel eSIM is almost always cheaper for stays beyond a 1–2 day transit. Local SIMs from Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink or Teletalk are sold in Dhaka and divisional cities but require passport biometric registration (fingerprint at the operator store) — a travel eSIM avoids this entirely.

Network coverage in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has four mobile operators: Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink and Teletalk. For Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Rajshahi — and main highways between them — all four deliver solid 4G. Grameenphone and Robi launched commercial 5G on 1 September 2025, initially across divisional headquarters; 4G remains the effective network for most travel itineraries. Banglalink and Teletalk have not yet launched 5G.

Among the five providers on this page: Airalo routes via Grameenphone. Roamless, aloSIM, Saily and Yesim do not publicly disclose their Bangladeshi carrier. The Sundarbans delta and the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Bandarban, Rangamati) have limited or no signal on every operator; Cox's Bazar is well covered along the shore.

Arrival protocol in Bangladesh

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International (DAC).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
If visiting Sundarbans, Chittagong Hill Tracts or remote border areas, download offline maps and accommodation contacts before leaving Dhaka.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Bangladesh
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink or Teletalk.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
Local prepaid SIMs require passport ID + biometric (fingerprint) registration at the operator store; a travel eSIM avoids this.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Bangladesh

Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. Bangladesh has no regional roaming agreement with any country — Indian, European, US, Gulf and Asian SIMs all roam at international rates. For stays over 1–2 days, a travel eSIM is usually cheaper.
Expecting 5G on a travel eSIM. Commercial 5G launched 1 September 2025 on Grameenphone and Robi (initial sites in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet; rolling to 200 sites end-2025, 1,000 by end-2026). However, travel eSIM partnerships are 4G-only as of May 2026 — none of the providers on this page have documented 5G enablement for Bangladesh.
Counting on signal in the Sundarbans or Chittagong Hill Tracts. The mangrove delta and CHT mountain regions (Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari) have limited or no coverage on every operator. Download offline maps in Dhaka or Chittagong before departure; carry a local guide and a charged power bank.

Four operators: Grameenphone (Telenor majority-owned, market leader, 107.4 MHz spectrum, widest rural footprint), Robi Axiata (104 MHz, merged with Airtel Bangladesh 2016), Banglalink (Veon group, 80 MHz), Teletalk (state-owned, 55.2 MHz). For Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet all four are workable. For rural areas, Cox's Bazar shore and divisional outskirts, Grameenphone has the widest historical 4G footprint.
Is there 5G in Bangladesh?
Commercial 5G launched on 1 September 2025. Grameenphone rolled across all 8 divisional headquarters; Robi launched initial sites in Fakirapul / Maghbazar Chowrasta / Dhaka University (Dhaka), Khulshi (Chattogram) and Sagor Dighir Par (Sylhet), targeting 200 sites by end-2025 and 1,000 by end-2026. Banglalink and Teletalk have not announced commercial 5G yet. Per Opensignal Jan 2026: Robi wins 5G Download Speed, Grameenphone wins 5G Video Experience. Travel eSIM 5G access is partner-dependent and not yet documented for the providers on this page.
