Telstra has no mobile network on Norfolk Island and explicitly confirms this. Optus and Vodafone do not roam here either. Norfolk Island operates a separate telecommunications regime. Visitors must purchase a SIM card or eSIM from Norfolk Telecom (9 New Cascade Road) or Norfone on arrival. Both operators offer eSIM — activation requires an in-person visit to their store.

Norfolk Island has two mobile operators: Norfolk Telecom (government-owned, 3G on 850 MHz and 4G on 700 MHz Band 28, Tourist Mobile Plan available) and Norfone (newer operator, Nokia 4G network on 850 MHz and 1800 MHz, VoLTE, Australian +61 prefix numbers). Both operators cover the populated areas of the island. No 5G. Telstra has no network on Norfolk Island and explicitly confirms this; Australian mainland SIM cards from Telstra, Optus or Vodafone do not roam to Norfolk Island — it operates a separate telecommunications regime.
Norfone now offers pre-flight eSIM activation online (norfone.au), so you can land already connected on its Australian +61 numbers; Norfolk Telecom's visitor SIM/eSIM is sold on-island (resellers around Burnt Pine). Third-party travel eSIMs are unreliable here — the island runs a separate telecoms regime with no live mainland roaming, so third-party travel eSIMs may not connect.
