Field tip — Darién and San Blas have no coverage
Panama City, Colón, David and Boquete have excellent 4G. The San Blas islands (Guna Yala) are remote — some larger islands have basic signal, most are without coverage. The Darién National Park (Darién Gap) has no signal and also has significant safety concerns — most governments advise against travel. Download offline maps for any San Blas or highland excursion.

Network coverage in Panama
Panama has two mobile operators: Más Móvil (also branded +Móvil, the wider-coverage operator with the stronger 5G network in Panama City and main tourist destinations, including reasonable signal in the San Blas Islands) and Tigo (solid second choice, good in Panama City, Colón, David and Boquete, but weaker than Más Móvil in remote areas). Both deliver reliable 4G/5G in cities and main tourist zones. The Darién National Park and Darién Gap have no signal regardless of operator.
On this page, Roamless routes via Tigo and Airalo via Tigo too (some recent sources say +Móvil); Saily does not disclose its carrier. Because +Móvil/Más Móvil has the wider reach — including the San Blas Islands — none of these is the obvious pick for San Blas or remote areas: confirm your plan's network first, or use a local +Móvil SIM. For Darién, see the field tip above.
Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?
Your carrier includes Panama at a clear, affordable rate→Use roaming — no action needed
Coming from EU or UK→eSIM is the standard choice
Coming from US / Canada / Australia / NZ — carrier charges per-day→eSIM cheaper for stays over 2 days
Coming from Asia — your carrier may have a regional deal→Check your carrier rates first
Coming from another region→Check your carrier rates first — eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming
Arrival protocol in Panama
Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Tocumen (PTY) or Panama Pacífico (BLB).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps and navigation charts — essential for San Blas sailing charters, Boquete highlands and any inland excursion.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Panama
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Claro or Tigo.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid in Panama
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges; Panama has no regional roaming agreement so most foreign SIMs are billed at international rates.
Choosing an eSIM that does not route via Claro for rural or coastal trips. Claro has the widest reach into Boquete, Bocas del Toro, the canal zone hinterland and outer San Blas. Tigo and Movistar drop sharply outside Panama City, Colón and David.
Expecting signal in San Blas or the Darién. Most outer San Blas islands and all of the Darién Gap have no coverage on any network. Download navigation charts before sailing or any inland approach to the Darién.
Buying an eSIM when home roaming is already favourable. If your carrier includes Panama at a clear rate, use it. Verify before buying.

Common questions about eSIM in Panama
Is there coverage in the San Blas islands?
Limited. The Guna Yala archipelago (San Blas) has basic coverage on some larger islands near Cartí and the eastern cluster. More remote islands have no signal. San Blas catamaran and sailboat charters typically have no mobile coverage once offshore. Download offline navigation charts before departure.
