How much will it cost for your trip?
Port Moresby, Lae, Madang and Goroka have reasonable 4G on Digicel. Coastal dive resorts (Milne Bay, Kimbe Bay on New Britain, Rabaul) have basic coverage at the resort. The Highlands (Mt Hagen, Tari) and most interior areas have very limited or no coverage. Wewak and the Sepik River area are largely offline. Most Western governments advise heightened caution for PNG — check your government's advisory before booking.
Port Moresby has reasonable 4G on Digicel. Madang and Goroka have basic coverage. Dive resorts at Kimbe Bay (New Britain) and Milne Bay have signal at shore. Highland trekking (Kokoda Track, Mt Wilhelm) is almost entirely offline. Download all route data, emergency contacts and accommodation information before leaving any city.

Papua New Guinea has four mobile operators. Digicel PNG is the dominant operator with the widest national 4G footprint — the most reliable choice for all tourist zones. Vodafone PNG (launched 2022) offers 4G+ coverage that is expanding rapidly across Port Moresby and main centres. Bmobile is 3G-only and not recommended for data-heavy travel; Telikom PNG has 4G in major cities only and is not a practical option for visitors. No 5G is available in PNG. For Port Moresby, Kokopo, Madang, Lae, Mount Hagen and Goroka, Digicel delivers the most reliable 4G coverage.
Outside main urban corridors, coverage drops sharply — the Highlands, the Kokoda Track, Tufi fjords and remote outer islands are on 2G or have no signal. Airalo (a dedicated PNG local plan) and Saily route via Digicel, the dominant network and the only realistic choice off the main grid. Roamless, aloSIM and Yesim do not disclose their carrier.
