Field tip — Chaco desert and remote areas have no signal

Asunción and main cities have good 4G. Encarnación (near Jesuit missions) and Ciudad del Este have decent coverage. The Gran Chaco — the dry forest covering western Paraguay — is extremely remote with very limited to no signal over vast distances. Download offline maps for any Chaco excursion. The Jesuit mission ruins near Encarnación have coverage in town.

Network coverage in Paraguay

Three operators serve Paraguay: Tigo (dominant, widest national 4G footprint, strongest choice outside urban centres), Claro (strong urban and suburban 4G, the only operator with 5G spectrum assigned as of 2025) and Personal (solid rural coverage, competitive urban speeds, but overall weaker network than Tigo). For Asunción, Encarnación and Ciudad del Este, all three deliver reliable 4G. Outside cities — the Chaco, the Jesuit missions area, rural eastern Paraguay — Tigo has the most consistent coverage.

On this page, Airalo routes via Tigo — the widest network outside the cities — and Roamless switches between Tigo and Claro; Saily does not disclose its carrier. For the Gran Chaco and other remote areas, a Tigo-routed plan is the safer pick — see the field tip above for coverage gaps.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Common questions about eSIM in Paraguay

Is there signal in the Gran Chaco?
Very limited to none. The Gran Chaco is one of South America's most remote regions — Filadelfia and Mariscal Estigarribia have basic signal but beyond these towns, coverage is absent over vast stretches. Download all offline maps and GPS coordinates before entering the Chaco.
