Field tip — Excellent coverage nationwide

Uruguay has some of the best mobile coverage in South America. Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia del Sacramento and all main coastal towns have strong 4G/5G. Interior Uruguay — Minas, Tacuarembó, the Cuchilla Grande highlands — has good coverage in towns and reasonable signal on main roads. Even remote estancias often have basic coverage on Antel.

Network coverage in Uruguay

Uruguay has three mobile operators: Antel (widest national coverage, strongest in rural areas and along the coast), Claro (solid urban coverage) and Tigo (formerly Movistar). For a typical itinerary — Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia del Sacramento, Salto — all three provide reliable 4G. 5G is available in Montevideo; the rest of the country remains on 4G or 3G in rural areas.

Antel has the widest national coverage and is the strongest choice for rural, interior and coastal itineraries. On this page, aloSIM's carrier is reported inconsistently (Antel by some sources, Claro by others), while Yesim and Saily do not disclose their Uruguayan carrier. None of the three clearly commits to Antel, so if you are travelling well beyond Montevideo and the main resorts, verify the network before relying on it — or pick up a local Antel SIM for the interior.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
