Airalo review: useful for travel eSIMs, but not for every situation
Airalo covers 200+ destinations with local, regional and global fixed data plans. It works well for short trips and light to moderate data use. It is not the right choice for heavy users on the unlimited tier, travellers who need calls on most destinations, or trips to countries where Airalo's app is blocked at the network level after arrival.

Airalo is a reliable choice for travellers who want a local-rate data plan without buying a physical SIM at the airport. Its main strengths are destination coverage, plan flexibility and price transparency. Fixed plans are usually the better value option — not the unlimited ones.
Most Airalo plans are data-only. A small subset of destinations — notably the United States — also offer plans that include a local phone number with calls and SMS; these are clearly labelled in the plan details. For the rest, calls and SMS are not included, so the home SIM stays active for that function while Airalo handles the data.
Before paying: check whether your home carrier's roaming plan already covers the destination at a comparable or lower price. For stays of 1–2 days in a country your carrier includes, roaming may be simpler. For stays of 3 days or more — or when the destination is outside your carrier's travel zone — a fixed Airalo plan is usually the more affordable option.
For Turkey specifically, Turkey's regulator BTK has blocked Airalo's app and website at the network level since 10 July 2025, alongside several other international eSIM providers. A pre-installed eSIM continues to work normally, but you cannot purchase, activate or top up from inside Turkey without a VPN. For the UAE and a few other destinations, the picture is different: Airalo itself is not formally blocked, but local VoIP and internet restrictions can interfere with activation or app access. Install and activate before departure whenever you can.

Destination coverage
Airalo covers more than 200 destinations with local plans — one of the widest coverages among consumer eSIM providers. Regional packs are available for Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America, MENA, sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean, which makes it practical for multi-country trips where switching between local plans would be inconvenient.
Plan flexibility
Fixed plans range from 1 GB to 100 GB depending on the destination — the highest volume tiers (50 GB and 100 GB) are available on the Europe (Eurolink) and Asia (Asialink) regional packs. Other regional packs are scoped more narrowly: Americanmex (USA, Canada, Mexico) caps at 10 GB, Menalink and Hello Africa cap at 3 GB, and Island Hopper (Caribbean) caps at 1 GB. For Latin America, the Latamlink pack offers fixed plans from 1 GB to 5 GB and a regional unlimited tier (subject to the same 3 GB/day fair use threshold). For a 4-day city trip, a 3–5 GB plan is usually sufficient and cheaper than an unlimited option.
Top-up availability
In most destinations, you can purchase additional data through the Airalo app if your plan runs out. This is practical when data use is unpredictable. The exception is destinations where the app is blocked — in those cases, buy a larger plan before departure.
Price transparency
Plans show price, data volume and validity period upfront. No hidden fees, no subscription trap. You pay once for a fixed plan and use it until it runs out or expires.
Unlimited plan fine print
Airalo's unlimited-style plans deliver high-speed data up to a 3 GB daily threshold (the default published in its fair use policy); past that point, speed drops to 1 Mbps until midnight local time. Some destinations advertise a different threshold directly in the plan details before purchase. For remote workers, video callers or anyone who needs fast data for extended periods, a large fixed plan (10–20 GB) typically delivers more consistent performance.
App access in restricted countries
In Turkey, Airalo's app and website have been blocked from local networks by regulator BTK since 10 July 2025, as part of a wider decision targeting several international eSIM providers. You cannot buy a plan, activate an eSIM or top up once you are in the country without a VPN — install and activate before departure, and buy more data than you expect to need. In a few other destinations such as the UAE, broader VoIP and internet rules can interfere with activation or app access even though Airalo itself is not formally blocked; the prudent move is to set up before flying.
No calls or SMS on most plans
The majority of Airalo plans are data-only. A small number of destinations — notably the United States — offer plans that include a local phone number with calls and SMS, labelled accordingly in the plan details. For data-only plans, if you receive 2FA codes by SMS, important calls on your home number, or need to be reachable on your usual number, keep your home SIM active alongside the Airalo eSIM.
Support response time
Airalo offers 24/7 chat support in-app and via WhatsApp. If you have a connectivity problem on arrival, checking which SIM has the data line and toggling airplane mode is usually faster than waiting for an agent.
After installing the Airalo eSIM, check that mobile data is set to use the eSIM line, not your home SIM. Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the Airalo eSIM as the data line. Then turn off data roaming on your home SIM. If you skip this step, your phone may continue using your home SIM for data — and you will receive the roaming bill you were trying to avoid.
Airalo is a transparent, flexible eSIM provider that works well for fixed-plan, short-to-medium trips. Check your home carrier's roaming rates first — if the destination is already covered at a comparable price, roaming is simpler. If not, Airalo's wide destination coverage and clear pricing make it a practical first option to evaluate.
