Saily review: good travel eSIM, but check the country list and hotspot terms

Saily offers fixed and unlimited data plans, unlimited hotspot sharing and built-in security tools. Saily advertises 200+ destinations, though third-party trackers and Saily's own product pages place practical inventory closer to 150. Before buying, verify your destination is included and check whether your home carrier's roaming is already sufficient.

Fast verdict

Saily is a well-designed travel eSIM product from Nord Security. Its clearest practical advantages are unlimited hotspot sharing — no daily cap — and a higher fair use threshold on unlimited plans (5 GB/day full speed vs the 3 GB/day common elsewhere). The built-in ad blocker and web protection are extras, not the main reason to choose it.

It is data-only. No calls or SMS are included. Keep your home SIM active for that. The 30-day activation window on purchased plans means you can buy before departure and activate on arrival — useful if you want to prepare in advance without starting the data clock immediately.

Before paying: check your home carrier's roaming terms for the destination. For 1–2 day trips where roaming is included, it may be simpler. For stays of 3+ days outside your carrier's travel zone, Saily's fixed plans are usually competitive.

Saily advertises 200+ destinations, but third-party trackers and Saily's own product pages place practical inventory closer to 150 — narrower than Airalo's inventory in less-common destinations. Verify your destination is listed before purchasing. For destinations where the app is blocked after arrival (Turkey, UAE), install before departure.

Editorial assessment

Per-criterion scoring against the published review rating framework. Four criteria, scale 1–5 each, no aggregate score. Each score is justified factually below.

CRITERION → SCORE → BASIS
Coverage breadth→5/5 — 200+ destinations according to Saily's own site. Multiple regional packs (Europe 35 countries, Global 110+).
Plan terms transparency→4/5 — fair use threshold, hotspot policy and 30-day activation window disclosed before purchase. Per-destination details require checking the specific plan.
Unlimited plans transparency→5/5 — 5 GB/day full speed, 1 Mbps after, 24-hour reset. Saily also acknowledges in its own materials that the fair use policy is enacted by the local network provider — partner-operator dependency named.
Hotspot policy transparency→4/5 — hotspot stated as uncapped, no dedicated daily limit. No explicit mention of partner-operator dependency on hotspot behaviour in published terms.
Saily in brief
TRAVEL NEED → FIT → WHAT TO CHECK
Short trip (1–5 days)→Good fit — competitive per-GB pricing on fixed plans
One week, moderate data use→Good fit — 10 GB fixed plan covers most standard trips
Multi-country trip→Regional plans available — verify all destinations are covered before purchase
Heavy data use (streaming, remote work)→Unlimited plan: 5 GB/day full speed, then reduced — higher threshold than most competitors
Hotspot / tethering for laptop→Good fit — unlimited hotspot, no daily cap
Calls and SMS→Not included — keep home SIM active
Top-up during travel→Available in most countries — not where the app is blocked
Restricted destinations (Turkey, UAE...)→Must install before arrival — app blocked in-country
Activation timing→30-day window after purchase — buy now, activate at departure
Keeping home SIM for SMS→Compatible — dual SIM, home SIM stays active
Choose Saily if…
You plan to share your mobile data with a laptop or tablet — unlimited hotspot with no daily cap is a real practical advantage.
You want a higher fair use threshold on unlimited plans — 5 GB/day full speed before throttling, compared to the 3 GB/day common elsewhere.
Your destination is in Saily's coverage list and you want a clean, well-designed app experience.
You want to buy the plan before departure but activate later — the 30-day window lets you purchase in advance without starting the data clock.
You already use NordVPN or NordPass and prefer a consistent ecosystem.
Your destination is outside your home carrier's travel zone and roaming would be expensive.
Consider skipping Saily if…
Your home carrier already covers the destination at a comparable or lower daily cost — roaming is simpler.
Your destination is not in Saily's coverage list — Airalo covers more countries.
You need calls or SMS included — Saily is data-only.
You are travelling to a destination where the app is blocked and cannot install before departure.
Your phone is locked to your home carrier — a locked phone will not accept a third-party eSIM.
You need Alaska coverage — Saily does not currently cover Alaska.
What Saily does well

Unlimited hotspot sharing

Saily does not cap hotspot use. This means you can tether a laptop throughout the day without hitting a daily shared-data ceiling. Some competing providers cap hotspot at 1 GB/day — which is insufficient for sustained laptop use. If sharing data across devices is part of your trip, this is Saily's clearest practical advantage.

Higher fair use threshold

On unlimited plans, Saily delivers full speed up to 5 GB/day before reducing. Most competitors cap at 3 GB/day. For remote workers, video callers or travellers who use data heavily throughout the day, this difference is meaningful in practice.

30-day activation window

Plans can be purchased up to 30 days before activation. You buy, install, and the data clock starts only when you activate on arrival. This is practical for trips booked well in advance.

Built-in security tools

The Saily app includes an ad blocker and web protection. These are useful extras on public Wi-Fi — but they are not a substitute for a full VPN if you need to bypass geographic restrictions or fully encrypt your connection. See the VPN guide for when a full VPN is needed.

Where Saily is weaker

Practical inventory narrower than advertised

Saily advertises 200+ destinations on its homepage. Third-party trackers and Saily's own product pages place practical inventory closer to 150 — narrower than Airalo's inventory in less-common destinations. For mainstream travel destinations this is rarely an issue. If your itinerary includes less-common destinations, verify coverage in the Saily app before purchasing.

App blocked in restricted countries

Like Airalo and aloSIM, Saily's app and website are blocked at the network level in Turkey by regulator BTK since 10 July 2025. A pre-installed eSIM continues to work normally, but you cannot purchase or top up from inside Turkey without a VPN. In other destinations such as the UAE, local VoIP and internet restrictions can interfere with activation or app access even though Saily itself is not formally blocked. Install before arrival where this applies.

Unlimited plan still throttles

5 GB/day at full speed is generous — but after that threshold, speed is reduced. If your use case requires high-speed data for the full day consistently (large file uploads, continuous video calls), a large fixed plan may be more predictable.

No calls or SMS

Saily is data-only. If you receive 2FA codes by SMS, or need to be reachable on your home number, keep your home SIM active alongside Saily.

Key product limits to understand
LIMIT → WHAT IT MEANS IN PRACTICE
Data-only — no calls or SMS→Keep home SIM active. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal for calls over data.
Unlimited plan: 5 GB/day full speed, then reduced→Higher threshold than most. After 5 GB, speed drops — adequate for casual use, not large uploads.
Unlimited hotspot — no daily cap→Practical advantage for laptop tethering. Hotspot data counts toward the fair use threshold.
Practical inventory narrower than advertised→Saily advertises 200+, practical inventory closer to 150. Verify your destination is listed before purchasing.
App blocked in some countries (Turkey, UAE...)→Install before arrival. Cannot purchase or top up in-country without a VPN.
30-day activation window→Buy in advance. Data clock starts on first activation, not purchase date.
eSIM device compatibility required→Requires an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone. Dial *#06# — look for an EID number.
Built-in tools (ad blocker, web protection)→Useful extras. Not a substitute for a full VPN when encryption or bypass is needed.
Field tip — the most common mistake

After installing the Saily eSIM, check that mobile data is set to use the Saily line, not your home SIM. Go to Settings → Mobile data → select Saily as the data line. Then turn off data roaming on your home SIM. If you skip this step, your home SIM handles the data — and you pay roaming rates you were trying to avoid. The Saily eSIM will appear to be working but will not be used.

Setup before departure
Confirm your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# — look for an EID number.
Download the Saily app and create an account.
Search for your destination. Verify it is listed before purchasing.
Choose your plan. For heavy use, unlimited is available — for predictable short trips, a fixed plan is usually sufficient.
Install the eSIM via QR code or directly in the app. Do this at home, not at the airport.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline — screenshot to your camera roll.
After installation, go to Settings → Mobile data → set Saily as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. Keep it active for calls and SMS.
Test a page load before departure to confirm everything is working.
Before you leave — checklist
Saily eSIM installed and data line set to Saily.
Data roaming off on home SIM.
QR code and setup instructions saved offline.
Home SIM active for calls and SMS.
Offline maps downloaded for destination.
Hotel address and key bookings saved offline.
If travelling to a restricted country: VPN installed and tested before departure.
