The EAEU (of which Armenia is a member) has discussed abolishing intra-union roaming, but as of 2026 this is still a project with no binding "home-rate" zone in effect; the only realised case so far is the bilateral Russia–Belarus arrangement. For anything beyond a 1–2 day stopover, a travel eSIM is almost always cheaper than carrier roaming. Local SIMs from Viva, Team or Ucom are sold in Yerevan but require passport registration.
Field tip — Coverage holds at the close monasteries but drops on the southern gorge roads
Yerevan and the main highways have solid 4G on all three carriers, and the day-trip sites near the capital — Geghard, Garni, Khor Virap, Sevanavark on Lake Sevan — keep functional signal. The gaps are further out and to the south: official regulator drive-tests put 13–23% of the major routes (depending on carrier) at no coverage, and Tatev, the Noravank gorge approach, the Debed Canyon monasteries and the back roads toward Syunik routinely lose data. Viva has the widest rural footprint, but no single carrier covers everything. Download offline maps and accommodation coordinates in Yerevan before heading south, and keep navigation offline on the Dilijan and Hankavan mountain roads.

Network coverage in Armenia
Armenia has three mobile operators: Viva Armenia, Team Telecom Armenia and Ucom. For a typical Armenia itinerary — Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, Dilijan — all three deliver solid 4G and 5G coverage. 5G is widely available: Ucom completed nationwide deployment in November 2025 covering most of the country; Viva Armenia has 5G in Yerevan and major cities; Team Telecom Armenia is rolling out but has not reached full coverage.
Remote monastery sites — Tatev, Noravank, Geghard, Khor Virap — Lake Sevan shore roads and mountain passes can drop signal. Of the three operators, Viva Armenia has the widest rural footprint. Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Yerevan Zvartnots (EVN).

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
