Belgian rail tickets are purchased through the SNCB/NMBS app (same app, bilingual), with digital tickets on your phone replacing paper. The De Lijn (Flemish buses and trams) and TEC (Walloon buses) apps are the standard way to buy regional transit passes. In Brussels, the STIB/MIVB app handles metro, tram and bus tickets. Inter-city train Wi-Fi is unreliable on IC services — save your QR ticket as a screenshot before boarding. Platforms at Brussels-Midi (Eurostar/Thalys hub), Brussels-Central and Brussels-Nord have adequate 4G coverage; rural halts do not.

Network coverage in Belgium

Belgium has three main mobile operators: Proximus (widest national coverage, dominant in rural Wallonia, the Ardennes region and coastal areas — 5G leader with the broadest geographic footprint), Orange Belgium (strong in Brussels and major Flemish cities) and Base (Telenet — competitive urban coverage across both regions). For Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Liège, all three operators perform well on 4G/5G. Differences appear in the Ardennes, Hautes Fagnes plateau, rural Hainaut and along the Luxembourg and German borders, where Proximus has the widest reach.

Arrival protocol in Belgium

Before departure from home

Download the SNCB/NMBS app and set up your account before arrival — buy intercity train tickets in advance for peak periods (Brussels–Bruges and Brussels–Ghent corridors fill quickly).
Download offline maps for the Ardennes and rural Wallonia — signal drops in forested valleys and off the main roads.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Belgium
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

Belgium has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Belgium

Can tourists get a SIM card in Belgium?
Generally yes, but Belgian law requires every prepaid card user to be identified. The regulator lists an international passport among the valid identity documents. The document must be the original rather than a copy, and it must be legible and valid. Visitors can therefore expect to show an identity document, such as a passport, when activating a Belgian prepaid card.
