Field tip — North coverage thins near national parks

Cotonou, Porto-Novo and the southern coast have good 4G on MTN (largest network) and Celtiis (state-backed 3rd operator launched Oct 2022, overtook Moov in Q1 2025 to become #2). The Atakora mountains, Pendjari National Park (lions, elephants) and northern border areas with Burkina Faso have very limited coverage on all operators. Download offline maps and wildlife reference guides before any northern safari.

Pendjari is one of West Africa's best wildlife parks. The park itself has almost no mobile coverage. Download tracks, waypoints and park information in Natitingou or Tanguiéta before entering. A local guide is required for most safaris inside the park.

Network coverage in Benin

Benin has three mobile operators: MTN Benin, Celtiis and Moov Africa Benin. For Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Parakou, Abomey-Calavi and the southern coast, all three deliver solid 4G. MTN leads on overall footprint. MTN launched the country's first commercial 5G in November 2024 and Moov Africa followed in April 2026; Celtiis has not yet launched 5G commercially.

Arrival protocol in Benin

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Cadjehoun International (COO).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
If visiting Pendjari, the Atakora or northern border areas, download offline maps and accommodation contacts before leaving Cotonou or Natitingou.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing at Cadjehoun
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select MTN, Celtiis or Moov.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
Local MTN, Celtiis or Moov prepaid SIMs require passport ID registration; a travel eSIM avoids this.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Benin

Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. Benin's only regional roaming agreement is the 2024 Free-Roaming initiative with Ghana and Mali — everyone else is charged international roaming by default.
Counting on Ghana/Mali/Benin Free-Roaming if your SIM is not from one of those three. The initiative covers only Beninese, Ghanaian and Malian SIMs — every other origin, Nigerian and Togolese included, pays standard international roaming.
Expecting 5G outside Cotonou and main cities. Commercial 5G is brand new and concentrated in major cities, and travel eSIM 5G enablement is not yet documented for the providers on this page — expect 4G/LTE.
Counting on signal in Pendjari and the Atakora. Pendjari National Park has almost no coverage on any operator — download offline maps and waypoints in Natitingou or Tanguiéta before entering.
