Cotonou, Porto-Novo and the southern coast have good 4G on MTN (largest network) and Celtiis (state-backed 3rd operator launched Oct 2022, overtook Moov in Q1 2025 to become #2). The Atakora mountains, Pendjari National Park (lions, elephants) and northern border areas with Burkina Faso have very limited coverage on all operators. Pendjari is one of West Africa's best wildlife parks. The park itself has almost no mobile coverage. Download tracks, waypoints and park information in Natitingou or Tanguiéta before entering. A local guide is required for most safaris inside the park.

Network coverage in Benin
Benin has three mobile operators: MTN Benin, Celtiis and Moov Africa Benin. For Cotonou, Porto-Novo, Parakou, Abomey-Calavi and the southern coast, all three deliver solid 4G. MTN leads on overall footprint. MTN launched the country's first commercial 5G in November 2024 and Moov Africa followed in April 2026; Celtiis has not yet launched 5G commercially.

Before departure from home

Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Cadjehoun International (COO).

If visiting Pendjari, the Atakora or northern border areas, download offline maps and accommodation contacts before leaving Cotonou or Natitingou.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing at Cadjehoun
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select MTN, Celtiis or Moov.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
Local MTN, Celtiis or Moov prepaid SIMs require passport ID registration; a travel eSIM avoids this.
VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid in Benin
Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. Benin's only regional roaming agreement is the 2024 Free-Roaming initiative with Ghana and Mali — everyone else is charged international roaming by default.
Counting on Ghana/Mali/Benin Free-Roaming if your SIM is not from one of those three. The 2024 initiative is limited to citizens of Benin, Ghana and Mali. Nigerian, Togolese or other West African SIMs do not benefit and incur standard international roaming.
Expecting 5G outside Cotonou and main cities. Commercial 5G is brand new (MTN March 2026, Moov 24 April 2026 with 230+ sites). Coverage is concentrated in major cities. Outside, you fall back to 4G/LTE — and travel eSIM 5G enablement is partner-dependent and not yet documented for the providers on this page.

Do I need a travel eSIM for Benin?
Benin's only regional roaming agreement is the 2024 Free-Roaming initiative with Ghana and Mali — Ghanaian and Malian SIMs roam at home tariffs, verified with your carrier. All other foreign SIMs are charged international roaming by default. For most international visitors, a travel eSIM is cheaper than carrier roaming beyond a 1–2 day stopover. Local SIMs from MTN (Spacetel), Celtiis or Moov are sold in Cotonou but require passport ID registration.
Which network is best for travel in Benin?
