Field tip — Accra and Kumasi have excellent 4G

Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast and Tamale have strong 4G. The Cape Coast castle area and Kakum National Park (canopy walkway) have good coverage. Mole National Park has signal at Mole Motel and the main viewing area. Remote northern Ghana and the Volta Region can be patchier.

Mole National Park (elephants, antelopes) has basic coverage at the main lodge but limited in the bush. Download offline maps and park information in Tamale before the drive to Mole. The Volta Region lakes and Afadjato mountain trails have variable coverage — download maps in Ho.

Network coverage in Ghana

Three mobile operators serve Ghana: MTN Ghana (dominant, widest 4G coverage), Telecel Ghana (formerly Vodafone Ghana, rebranded 2024) and AT Ghana (state-owned). For Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Cape Coast and Takoradi, MTN and Telecel both provide reliable 4G. A shared 5G backbone (NGIC) went live in March 2026 in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale, but retail 5G is not yet available to consumers.

AT Ghana has the weakest rural footprint — not recommended for itineraries outside major cities. Coverage drops in the Northern Region and remote forest areas on all operators. Travel eSIM providers on this page route via MTN or Telecel — check the carrier listed on each provider card.

Arrival protocol in Ghana

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Ghana
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Ghana

Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.
