Network coverage in Brunei

Brunei has two mobile operators: DST and Progresif. For a standard itinerary — Bandar Seri Begawan, Seria, Kuala Belait and the Empire Hotel coast — both operators perform well with 4G/5G. Progresif launched commercial 5G in 2020; DST followed and both cover main urban corridors. DST has the wider footprint in rural areas and approaching Ulu Temburong National Park, where forest canopy reduces signal regardless of operator.

Mistakes to avoid in Brunei

Assuming your Brunei eSIM covers the Temburong route via Sarawak. The land crossing transits Malaysian territory where a Brunei eSIM will not work — plan an Asia regional eSIM or a separate Malaysia profile for that segment.
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.

Can tourists get a SIM card in Brunei?
Yes, visitors can register a local prepaid SIM card, but registration is compulsory. Under the telecom regulator's code of practice, tourists must present a valid original passport from their country of origin, and it is the only document listed for visitors. Licensed mobile operators are required to record the subscriber's details, and users must supply their full name, ID number and address.
