How much will it cost for your trip?
Malaysia has three major networks: CelcomDigi (largest, best rural and Borneo coverage), Maxis/Hotlink (strong urban + nearly equivalent rural), and U Mobile (cheap, weak in rural areas and East Malaysia). If your trip includes Sabah or Sarawak (Borneo), or interior rainforest and national park areas like Mulu or Kinabalu, choose an eSIM that routes via CelcomDigi or Maxis. Mobile data is strong in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching city centres but drops quickly outside urban areas. Download offline maps before any rural detour, regardless of provider.
Under MCMC rules updated in February 2026, buying a physical prepaid SIM in Malaysia now requires your original passport, a biometric photo and a Malaysian hotel address for registration — adding 10 to 20 minutes at the airport counter. A travel eSIM installed before departure skips this entirely: data works the moment you land. If you specifically need a Malaysian phone number for OTP-protected services, a physical SIM is still the route, but most tourists doing 7–14 days do not.

Network coverage in Malaysia
Three major networks: CelcomDigi (formed by the 2023 merger of Celcom and Digi — largest by subscribers, widest Peninsula coverage), Maxis (strong in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru and urban centres; consistent nationwide performance) and U Mobile (competitive urban pricing, thinner rural reach). Malaysia’s 5G is shifting from a single government network (DNB) to a dual-network model — CelcomDigi and Maxis run on DNB, while U Mobile has built its own second 5G network (live since 2025). 5G is widespread in cities, but the travel eSIMs here run on 4G/LTE, reliable across cities and main highways.
In East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo), coverage is good in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching but drops in the interior. Taman Negara and remote Sarawak longhouse routes have limited or no signal regardless of provider. Provider routing: Airalo routes via Maxis at 4G/LTE and Roamless also via Maxis; aloSIM spans CelcomDigi, Maxis and U Mobile (multi-operator). Malaysia has no blanket internet restrictions for travellers — all major apps work normally. On public Wi-Fi (hotels, cafés, airports), a VPN masks your traffic from the network operator. A password manager and a secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
