Cameroon's Anglophone regions (Northwest and Southwest) have experienced conflict since 2016 — most governments advise against travel there. Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, Limbe and the south are accessible to tourists. Mount Cameroon (4,040m) has signal in Buea but none on the upper mountain. The Dja Faunal Reserve (gorillas) has very limited coverage.

Douala and Yaoundé have good 4G on both MTN and Orange. Buea (gateway to Mount Cameroon) has signal in town. Above 2,000m on the mountain, coverage drops. Download offline maps and porter/guide contact information in Buea before any ascent. The Dja rainforest reserve requires a guide — download route data in the nearest town before entering.

Network coverage in Cameroon

Four mobile operators serve Cameroon: Orange Cameroun, MTN Cameroon, Nexttel (Viettel joint venture), and Camtel Mobile. Orange and MTN dominate; Nexttel is a focused challenger; Camtel is the smallest player. For a typical itinerary — Douala, Yaoundé, Kribi, Limbe, Bamenda, Bafoussam, Maroua — Orange and MTN both offer 4G in cities and main road corridors. Commercial 5G has not launched in Cameroon — it is not yet authorised for commercial use (the regulator is still finalising the licensing framework), so 4G remains the network you will rely on.

Coverage in remote areas remains a challenge across all operators. Arrival protocol in Cameroon

After landing in Cameroon
