How much will it cost for your trip?
Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca have strong 4G. The avenue of the volcanoes (Quilotoa Loop, Cotopaxi) has coverage in main towns but gaps on highland roads. The Galápagos Islands have very limited 4G — Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal have basic signal in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, but wildlife reserve areas and remote islands have no coverage. The Amazon basin (Puyo, Tena, Lago Agrio) has very limited signal outside towns.

Network coverage in Ecuador
Ecuador has three mobile operators: Claro Ecuador (América Móvil, market leader, widest national coverage, ~9.6M subscribers), Movistar (acquired by Millicom on 30 October 2025 and transitioning to the Tigo brand through 2026, ~5.3M subscribers) and CNT (state-owned). For Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, the Galápagos, Mindo and Baños, Claro and Movistar/Tigo cover the main cities and tourist routes. Commercial 5G launched in late 2025: CNT (October) and Claro (December) run it in Quito, Guayaquil and a handful of other spots — Claro reaches Puerto Ayora in the Galápagos — while Tigo deploys through 2026. Otherwise Galápagos coverage is limited: Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo have 4G; remote islands and boat crossings are largely offline.
CNT (state-owned) is the weakest of the three for travel — limited 4G outside Quito and Guayaquil. Travel eSIM providers on this page route via Claro, Movistar/Tigo or CNT — check the carrier listed on each provider card. Claro-routed eSIMs give the widest coverage for the Galápagos, the Amazon basin and highland routes.

VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
