Field tip — Amazon has no signal; Machu Picchu covered

Lima, Cusco and Arequipa have strong 4G. Machu Picchu pueblo (Aguas Calientes) has good signal; the Machu Picchu citadel itself has coverage from the sun gate. The Inca Trail trekking route has very limited signal between checkpoints. The Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo, Pisac) has coverage in main towns. The Amazon basin — Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Manu — has very limited signal in towns and none in jungle.

Network coverage in Peru

Four mobile operators serve Peru: Movistar (widest guaranteed coverage nationally per OSIPTEL 2025), Claro (strongest download speeds, wide urban and rural reach), Bitel (competitive on rural coverage, leads speeds in several regions), and Entel (Best Network per Opensignal February 2026, strong in Lima and cities, limited rural footprint). 5G is available in Lima and main cities on all four operators. For Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Arequipa, Lake Titicaca and Iquitos, all four deliver reliable 4G/5G in main zones. Andean high-altitude routes and Amazon jungle areas have variable-to-no coverage regardless of operator.

On this page, Airalo's Peru plans run on Claro or Movistar depending on the plan, Saily runs on Claro, and Roamless does not clearly disclose its carrier. For the Lima–Cusco route and Andean trekking areas, see the field tip above for specific coverage gaps.

Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Peru
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Peru

Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.

Common questions about eSIM in Peru

Which network is best for Cusco and Machu Picchu?
Peru has four operators: Claro (dominant, widest 4G coverage including tourist areas and main highways), Bitel (strong rural coverage, particularly in Andean areas), Movistar (solid in Lima and cities) and Entel PE (urban). For Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, Claro and Bitel both provide reliable coverage. For remote Andean roads, Bitel is often stronger.
