Field tip — None of the providers on this page use NTT Docomo

NTT Docomo is Japan's largest carrier by coverage and has the widest reach in remote rural areas, mountainous regions (Japanese Alps, remote Tohoku, parts of Shikoku) and some remote islands. None of the providers documented on this page use Docomo — all route via KDDI and/or SoftBank. For most city-based and standard tourist itineraries this makes no practical difference; KDDI and SoftBank cover Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Hokkaido cities and most Shinkansen corridors well. If your itinerary includes serious backcountry hiking or very remote destinations, factor this in: a local Docomo prepaid SIM (available at airport counters and convenience stores) may offer better coverage on those specific routes.

Field tip — Japan data consumption is higher than most destinations

A typical 7-day Tokyo + Kyoto trip consumes 7–10 GB of mobile data — plans of 1–3 GB for a week are insufficient once you account for navigation, translation apps and offline map syncing. Multiple independent sources converge on ~1 GB/day as the baseline for a first-time visitor. Download maps and transit directions before boarding the Shinkansen — tunnels cut signal frequently.

Field tip — Mobile Suica works on iPhone; foreign Android cannot install it

Mobile Suica (and Mobile PASMO) works on iPhone 8 or later — add the card in Apple Wallet and tap to ride trains, buses and pay at convenience stores. Foreign Android phones cannot install Mobile Suica — only Japanese-purchased Android devices support it. The alternative is the Welcome Suica Mobile app (English, no Japanese Apple ID required, 180-day validity). Setup requires an active data connection — install and load funds before arrival.

Network coverage in Japan

Japan has three major mobile networks: NTT Docomo, SoftBank and KDDI (au). For city travel — Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Sapporo — all three provide excellent 4G/5G coverage. NTT Docomo has the widest national footprint, with the most consistent coverage in rural mountainous areas and remote regions. SoftBank and KDDI are strong in cities and along main rail corridors. Coverage on Shinkansen lines is generally reliable on all three networks.

Arrival protocol in Japan

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps for all destinations — especially important for rural hiking routes.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
Save accommodation addresses and booking confirmations offline.
After landing in Japan
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

Japan has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Japan

Assuming any travel eSIM covers remote backcountry areas. None of the providers on this page use NTT Docomo, the network with the widest rural and mountain coverage — for serious backcountry hiking, a local Docomo SIM does better on remote routes.
Not downloading offline maps before leaving cities. Mountainous areas, rural valleys and some island routes have limited or absent coverage — download your full itinerary offline before leaving any major city.
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges from your home carrier even when the eSIM is active.
Forgetting that IC cards (Suica, Pasmo) require setup. They can be added to Apple Wallet or Osaifu-Keitai before arrival with a payment method, or bought physically at airport and station kiosks — neither requires a Japanese SIM.

Common questions about eSIM in Japan

What is the WhatsApp equivalent in Japan?
LINE is the messaging app that fills WhatsApp's role in Japan. In the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' fiscal 2023 survey of 1,500 people aged 13 to 69, 94.9% of respondents used it, ranging from 86.3% of those in their sixties to 99.5% of those in their twenties. The survey does not measure WhatsApp, so the comparison rests on LINE's reach alone.
