Field tip — Japan data use is higher than expected
Navigating Japan's train system requires Google Maps running continuously. Add translation apps (camera mode is data-intensive), restaurant reservation apps, and Google Pay — and a typical week in Tokyo + Kyoto uses 5–10 GB. A 1 GB or 3 GB plan is not enough for a week-long trip.

WHERE YOU TRAVEL FROM
Europe — Japan is outside all EU roaming zones. A travel eSIM is almost always the better option.
USA / Canada — check if your carrier has a Japan day pass. Typically $10–15/day, making a 7-day eSIM cheaper.
Australia / NZ — carrier roaming in Japan is available but expensive for stays over a few days.
Asia — some carriers have strong Japan roaming agreements. Check your carrier before buying an eSIM.

Before you leave
Install before the flight — in-flight mode allows installation but activation requires landing.
Download Google Maps offline for Tokyo, Kyoto or wherever you are going.
Download Google Translate offline Japanese pack — camera translation mode uses data otherwise.
Save your hotel address in Japanese characters offline — easier to show taxi drivers.
Set the eSIM as your mobile data line. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Not sure if you need an eSIM?
Japan is one of the destinations where roaming is almost always more expensive than a dedicated eSIM plan. Check your carrier's Japan rate, but for stays of 3+ days, an eSIM is nearly always the better value.
