How much will it cost for your trip?
Taiwan has three major networks: Chunghwa Telecom (widest coverage including mountains and remote areas), Taiwan Mobile, and FarEasTone (strongest 5G in cities). The west-coast corridor (Taipei–Taichung–Tainan–Kaohsiung) has excellent 5G on all three. Coverage on the east coast (Hualien, Taitung), in Taroko Gorge, around Sun Moon Lake, and on the central mountain range remains usable on Chunghwa where Taiwan Mobile and FarEasTone may show gaps. If your itinerary leaves the west coast, a Chunghwa-routed eSIM is the safest default. Download offline maps before heading east or into the mountains regardless of provider.
LINE is Taiwan's dominant messaging app, used by around 94% of the population. Many hotels, drivers, tour operators and restaurant reservations are coordinated through LINE rather than WhatsApp, Messenger or SMS. WhatsApp is sometimes accepted as an alternative by tour operators, but LINE is expected for most local interactions. Install and verify LINE before departure on your home network — once verified, it works fully on data with any travel eSIM.

Network coverage in Taiwan
Three major networks: Chunghwa Telecom (widest national coverage, strongest on mountain trails, east coast and outer islands; wins Opensignal 5G Coverage Experience), Taiwan Mobile (strong in Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung and main cities; competitive 5G) and FarEasTone (solid urban and main corridor coverage, leads on 5G availability at 25.5% per Opensignal). For Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and the western plain, all three deliver excellent 4G/5G.
Coverage weakens on mountain trails above mid-altitude (Yushan, Hehuanshan, Central Mountain Range), inside Taroko Gorge's narrower sections, and on outer islands (basic 4G in main settlements only). Chunghwa Telecom has the strongest remote coverage. On this page, Airalo (the Xie Xie plan) routes via Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile — dual-network access — aloSIM also routes via Taiwan Mobile, while Yesim, Roamless and Saily do not disclose their Taiwanese carrier. VPN, passwords and documents
Taiwan has no internet restrictions — all major platforms work freely, including services blocked in mainland China. On public Wi-Fi (iTaiwan network, hotels), a VPN masks your traffic from the network operator. A password manager and a secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
