How much will it cost for your trip?
Northern Laos has very limited mobile coverage outside town centres. Phongsali, Luang Namtha, the Plain of Jars, and the multi-day trekking routes around Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi are largely offline. Even Unitel — the strongest network nationwide — drops out on mountain passes and in remote villages; coverage in the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don) is basic 4G on the main island clusters (Don Det, Don Khon) but weaker than northern cities. Download Maps.me or Google Maps offline for your full itinerary, including nearby towns, before leaving Luang Prabang or Vientiane. A small data plan (2–3 GB) is usually enough for the city portions of a Laos trip; expect zero signal on multi-day treks regardless of provider.
In Laos, the underlying carrier matters more than the eSIM brand. 4 networks: Unitel (Star Telecom, JV between Vietnam's Viettel and the Lao Ministry of Defense — strongest combination of nationwide coverage and 4G/5G speed, ~95%+ population), Lao Telecom (LTC, state-owned, wide coverage and the first to launch 5G in parts of Vientiane), ETL (3rd, present nationwide but generally less recommended for rural travel), and TPlus (formerly Beeline, smallest). Common eSIM partner mappings: Airalo and aloSIM use ETL; Roafly uses Lao Telecom; Roamless and Jetpac use Lao Telecom (Laotel). For rural reliability, verify the partner network before buying or consider a local Unitel SIM at Wattay airport (Vientiane). Lao law requires passport-based SIM registration since 2022 (the vendor takes a photo of your passport and sometimes your face); international travel eSIMs are exempt from this registration via international roaming.

Four mobile networks operate in Laos: Unitel (widest nationwide coverage, strongest rural and mountain reach), Lao Telecom / LTC (strong in Vientiane and provincial towns, 5G in parts of Vientiane), ETL (present nationwide but less consistent outside major areas) and TPlus (smallest network). For Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Pakse, Unitel and LTC deliver reliable 4G.

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road.
