Field tip — Island coverage varies; check the carrier before you buy

Large, developed islands — Phuket and Koh Samui — have strong coverage in tourist areas. Smaller islands — Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe — have patchy 4G outside main villages; beach areas and jungle interiors can drop to edge or no signal. Download offline maps before the ferry for any inter-island or remote itinerary.

Field tip — AIS has the strongest rural and island coverage

In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya, both AIS and True Corp perform well on 4G/5G. Outside cities — ferry routes, northern mountains, national parks, smaller islands — AIS measurably leads. Opensignal's 2025 Thailand report awarded AIS the Coverage Experience metric outright (score 8.5/10, widest geographic footprint among Thai operators). True Corp is competitive in cities but has rural gaps while the post-merger DTAC network integrates. If your itinerary leaves the main tourist corridor, a provider routing via AIS gives more reliable coverage.

Field tip — LINE is Thailand's primary messaging app; install before departure

Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, drivers and tour operators in Thailand use LINE rather than WhatsApp or email for booking confirmations, address sharing and pickup arrangements. Network coverage in Thailand

Two major networks operate in Thailand: AIS (widest geographic footprint, Opensignal 2025 Coverage Experience winner) and True Corp (formerly DTAC and TrueMove H, now merged). For Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Koh Samui and the main tourist corridors, both perform well with 4G/5G. The differences appear on ferry routes, smaller islands, northern mountain provinces and national park interiors, where AIS maintains stronger coverage.

Arrival protocol in Thailand

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival — free, online only.
Install the eSIM before your flight.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps for all destinations — especially essential for island trips before leaving the mainland.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
Save hotel address, ferry schedules and travel insurance offline.
After landing in Thailand
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

Thailand has no significant internet restrictions for travellers — mainstream apps work without a VPN. On public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports), a VPN masks your traffic from the network operator. A password manager and a secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Thailand

Not downloading island maps offline. Signal on Koh Tao and remote beaches is unreliable — download everything before the ferry.
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will use it and generate charges.
Buying too small a plan for a long stay. Remote work or streaming uses data faster than casual browsing.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.
