How much will it cost for your trip?
Mongolia is vast (1.56 million km²) with a population of only 3.3 million, mostly concentrated in Ulaanbaatar. Outside UB and provincial capitals, mobile coverage drops sharply. The Gobi Desert, central steppe, Khövsgöl Lake area and most nomadic camp regions have no signal on any network. A travel eSIM is useful for UB and provincial towns — but do not rely on it for navigation in remote areas. Download all maps, route data and itineraries while still in Ulaanbaatar.
Ulaanbaatar has excellent 4G and is fully connected. Karakorum (Kharkhorin), Ölgii, Khovd and provincial capitals have signal in the town centres. Everything between towns — the steppe, desert tracks, river crossings and nomadic routes — is offline. Use Maps.me or OsmAnd with Mongolia maps downloaded. A satellite communicator (Garmin inReach) is recommended for remote Gobi and Altai trips.

Mongolia has four mobile operators: Mobicom (dominant, widest 4G coverage including ger district Ulaanbaatar and provincial centres), Unitel (second by share, all-Mongolian-owned, strong in Ulaanbaatar and aimag capitals), Skytel (budget) and G-Mobile (a separate operator on CDMA/450 MHz, focused on the western aimags). For the standard itinerary — Ulaanbaatar, Terelj, the Gobi (Dalanzadgad), Kharkhorin and the Orkhon Valley — Mobicom has the most consistent 4G outside the capital. 5G is only just launching, with initial clusters in Ulaanbaatar and at major mining sites after 2025 licence awards. Remote steppe, desert, mountain valleys and most national parks have patchy or no coverage on any network.
Among the providers on this page, Airalo routes via Mobicom (4G) — the widest rural reach; Roamless and Saily do not disclose their Mongolian carrier. For multi-region travel including the Gobi or northern lakes, the Mobicom-routed Airalo plan is the more reliable choice. Offline maps are strongly recommended for any itinerary outside Ulaanbaatar and the aimag capitals.

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
