Beyond price: which providers bypass the Great Firewall?

The three providers surfaced above are ranked on price, value-per-GB and unlimited cost — the standard axes used across every country on this site. For China, a fourth axis matters at least as much: does the provider route traffic in a way that bypasses the Great Firewall? The cards above do not reflect this dimension. The bypass comes from the data exiting mainland China (a roaming gateway in Hong Kong, Singapore or Europe), not from any "built-in VPN" — so it depends on each provider's routing, which can change without notice. Treat the status below as verified in early 2026, not a permanent guarantee: a VPN is not required to get online, but it remains a sensible insurance against routing changes, a provider you have not confirmed, or any app that misbehaves. Among the five providers we documented for China:

Yesim markets a built-in Firewall bypass. From its official China page: "Built-in VPN. Our plans let you use WhatsApp, TikTok, and other services without restrictions." This rests on Yesim's own marketing — we located no independent field test, unlike Airalo or Saily, so the claim is weaker on evidence even if plausible. Saily flags an app-level limitation — its China page states "Due to local restrictions, access to the Saily app may be limited in China." That concerns in-app management (top-up, support, history), not the data path: a field test across three Chinese cities in early 2026 found Saily's data uncensored, with WhatsApp, Google Search and streaming working. So the data bypasses the Firewall via its roaming exit; only the management app may be unreachable. Airalo is the best-documented bypass here: it routes data out of mainland China, and multiple independent field tests in early 2026 (including a three-month test by Freaking Nomads) found Google, WhatsApp and Instagram working without a VPN. aloSIM is the only provider stating the opposite — its own support page says its China eSIM does not bypass the Firewall, so a separate VPN is needed with it. Roamless publishes no bypass claim and we have not tested it, so its status is simply unknown rather than negative. Roamless offers a free 400 MB welcome trial on the web (one-time per account) useful to test specific app behaviour before committing money. As above, none of this is permanent — keep a VPN handy as insurance rather than relying on any single status holding indefinitely.

Network coverage in China

Three carriers operate in mainland China: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. For a typical Tier 1 city trip — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu — all three perform well with 4G and increasingly 5G. The differences appear outside Tier 1 cities. China Mobile has the widest nationwide footprint including remote western provinces (Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, parts of Inner Mongolia). China Unicom and China Telecom are strong in coastal and central regions but thinner in the far west.

Among the five providers documented on this page, most route via one of the three Chinese carriers above — carrier varies by provider and plan; check the product page for the specific network before purchase. Saily and Yesim do not publicly surface their Chinese carrier routing. For Tier 1 city travel, all five perform adequately. For travel into Tibet, Xinjiang, rural Yunnan or remote Inner Mongolia, verify network footprint in your specific destinations before relying on the eSIM for navigation or communication.
