How much will it cost for your trip?
Windhoek, Swakopmund and Lüderitz have good 4G. Along the B1 and B2 highways between Windhoek and Etosha, coverage is reasonable at towns. Etosha National Park waterholes and main camps (Okaukuejo, Halali, Namutoni) have signal. Sossusvlei dunes area has basic signal in Sesriem. The Skeleton Coast, Damaraland (Twyfelfontein) and Kaokoland are largely offline.
Namibia's famous self-drive routes — C roads and D roads — are gravel tracks far from any cell tower. Download offline maps (iOverlander, Maps.me for Namibia, and offline tracks for the C14, C19, C27) before leaving Windhoek or Swakopmund. A satellite communicator is strongly recommended for remote Kaokoland or Skeleton Coast self-drives.

Namibia has three mobile operators: MTC, TN Mobile (Telecom Namibia), and Paratus (4G/5G data-only, launched September 2025). MTC is overwhelmingly dominant and has significantly wider 4G coverage than TN Mobile — the gap is operationally meaningful for self-drive itineraries beyond cities. MTC has commercial 5G. For Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Etosha, Damaraland, Lüderitz and Fish River Canyon, MTC is the only operator with reliable inter-city coverage.
Critically, both travel eSIMs here route via TN Mobile (Telecom Namibia), not MTC — Airalo on TN Mobile and aloSIM on TN Mobile capped at 3G. TN Mobile reaches only about half the country, and travellers regularly report these eSIMs failing outside Windhoek and Swakopmund. Neither uses MTC, the one network with reliable self-drive coverage. For any itinerary beyond the main towns, buy a local MTC tourist SIM or eSIM at Windhoek's Hosea Kutako airport instead. On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road.
