How much will it cost for your trip?
Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and all major cities have excellent 4G/5G on Vodacom and MTN. Kruger National Park — main rest camps (Skukuza, Berg-en-Dal, Satara) have signal; remote bush drives and the northern sections can be patchy. The Garden Route (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma) has strong coverage. The Wild Coast is more variable.
The Cape Peninsula, Winelands (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek), Garden Route and all main tourist areas have excellent signal. For Kruger self-drive, download offline maps and animal identification apps (iNaturalist works offline) before entering at Malelane, Crocodile Bridge or Phabeni gates. Signal disappears on remote S-roads inside the park.

South Africa has four major mobile operators: Vodacom (market leader, widest geographic coverage), MTN South Africa (strong nationwide, leads on 5G metrics in independent benchmarks), Telkom Mobile and Cell C. Both Vodacom and MTN launched 5G in 2020 and have strong 5G rollout in major cities. For a typical itinerary — Cape Town and the Winelands, the Garden Route, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Kruger National Park — both Vodacom and MTN deliver reliable 4G/5G. Telkom and Cell C are not recommended for travel outside urban areas.
In Kruger, both Vodacom and MTN have 4G at main camps (Skukuza, Satara, Lower Sabie, Berg-en-Dal, Letaba); signal drops to 2G or zero between camps and in deeper bush. On this page, Airalo (typically), aloSIM and Roamless all route via Vodacom — the widest rural and national-park network, so the pool suits safari and Garden Route trips well. MTN is faster for city 5G but none of these use it, and most travel plans are 4G-capped anyway. Local SIMs need RICA passport registration — a travel eSIM avoids this.
