Pakistan is not an EU member. EU RLAH does not apply. Carrier roaming is expensive. A travel eSIM is almost always cheaper. Pakistan's tourist areas (Lahore Old City, Hunza, Fairy Meadows, K2 basecamp approach) are popular with trekkers and cultural visitors. Check your government's travel advisory for specific regions before booking — the security situation varies significantly by area.

Field tip — Download offline maps for the Karakoram Highway, Hunza and K2 basecamp before leaving Islamabad

Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar have good 4G. Along the Karakoram Highway (KKH) to Gilgit and Hunza, Jazz has coverage in main towns. Above Karimabad (Hunza), signal becomes intermittent. Fairy Meadows, K2 Concordia and Skardu mountain areas have very limited signal. Download offline maps and GPS data before departing Islamabad or Gilgit. Also note that VPNs are officially restricted in Pakistan though widely used in practice.

Network coverage in Pakistan

Four mobile operators serve Pakistan: Jazz (widest national footprint, 5G launched March 2026 in major cities), Zong (top-ranked for overall coverage per PTA 2026 benchmarks, 5G launched March 2026 in 21 cities), Telenor Pakistan (acquired by PTCL in December 2025, brand continues; no 5G; historically strong in KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan), and Ufone (PTCL, 5G launching mid-2026). For Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and main cities, Jazz and Zong both deliver reliable 4G/5G.

For the Karakoram Highway, Hunza, Skardu and the northern mountains, Jazz and Zong now have the broadest rural reach (Jazz is strongest for the deep north). On this page, Roamless, Yesim, Airalo, aloSIM and Saily do not disclose their carrier. Coverage still drops between towns on the KKH past Gilgit regardless of network, so download offline maps.

Arrival protocol in Pakistan

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Pakistan
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Which network is best for travel in Pakistan?
Pakistan has four operators: Jazz/Mobilink (dominant, widest nationwide 4G coverage including the KKH corridor and Gilgit-Baltistan), Zong/China Mobile (fastest speeds in cities, expanding in northern regions), Telenor PK (solid nationwide) and Ufone (primarily urban). For Lahore, Islamabad and major cities, all four are excellent. For the Karakoram Highway, Hunza and Gilgit-Baltistan mountain areas, Jazz has the most consistent coverage.
