Field tip — 5G nationwide thanks to World Cup 2022 infrastructure investment
Qatar built out extraordinary mobile infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. 5G is available across Doha, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah and throughout the major sporting venues. Lusail City, the Corniche, the Souq Waqif and Museum of Islamic Art all have excellent 5G signal. Qatar is compact (11,571 km²) — coverage is strong nationwide even in the northern oil fields and Al Khor. The southern desert areas near the Saudi border have basic signal.
Field tip — VoIP voice and video calls are blocked on Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar
As of 2026, Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar block WhatsApp voice/video, Skype and FaceTime at the network level under the Communications Regulatory Authority's VoIP licensing rules. Text messaging on these apps works normally. Microsoft Teams and Google Meet are licensed and function for meetings. For personal calls, hotel Wi-Fi may work depending on the venue. The restriction is stable and applies regardless of which travel eSIM you use, since all eSIMs route through one of the two licensed Qatari operators.
Coverage notes cross-referenced from multiple independent sources.
Prepaid tiers (1–20 GB) and unlimited plans. Entry $4.99. The 20 GB/30-day tier works out to $2.45/GB. Unlimited from $17.99/5 days. Network not disclosed.
Unlimited from $17.99
Unlimited up to 5 GB/day at full speed, then throttled to 1 Mbps.
Two mobile operators run networks in Qatar: Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar. Both operate 5G. There is no third consumer operator. For a typical itinerary — Doha, Lusail City, Pearl-Qatar, Al Wakrah, Al Khor — both deliver reliable 4G/5G throughout.
5G coverage is nationwide across Qatar's urban and suburban areas. Signal can be limited in the southern desert. Qatar consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world for mobile download speed, making network quality a non-issue for most itineraries.
Provider routing on this page: Roamless, Saily and Yesim do not publicly disclose their Qatar carrier. Since only two licensed networks exist — Ooredoo and Vodafone, both with nationwide 5G — every eSIM runs on one or the other, so coverage is reliable whichever you choose.
Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?
YOUR SITUATION → USE THIS
Your carrier already includes Qatar in an international plan or bundle at a clear rate→Use carrier roaming — no action needed. Check your specific plan first.
Coming from EU or UK — no roaming agreement covers Qatar (Qatar is outside EU RLAH and UK roaming zones)→Carrier roaming is expensive; a travel eSIM is usually cheaper beyond a 1–2 day stopover
Coming from another GCC country (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman) — no automatic GCC Roam Like at Home→Check your carrier's GCC roaming bundle (stc, Mobily, Zain, du, e& (formerly Etisalat), Omantel offer dedicated packages); a travel eSIM is competitive if no bundle is active
US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand SIM — per-day international roaming charges typical→Carrier per-day fees add up quickly; a travel eSIM is usually cheaper beyond 2–3 days
Coming from another region not covered above→Check your carrier rates first; a travel eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming for stays of more than a few days
Arrival protocol in Qatar
Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Hamad International Airport (DOH).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
If you rely on WhatsApp voice or video calls, plan an alternative — these are blocked on Qatari networks (text messaging still works; Microsoft Teams and Google Meet work).
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing at Hamad International Airport
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Ooredoo or Vodafone Qatar.
Local Ooredoo and Vodafone SIM cards are sold at airport kiosks but require passport ID and in-person registration — a pre-installed eSIM activates immediately.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
VPN, passwords and documents
Qatari Riyal (QAR) is the local currency. On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN is useful for banking and work connectivity. A password manager and a secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid in Qatar
Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. Qatar has no regional roaming agreement with any country, so foreign carriers apply standard international roaming by default. A small number of carriers include Qatar in international bundles — check your specific plan before relying on it. For stays beyond a 1–2 day stopover, a travel eSIM is usually cheaper.
Expecting WhatsApp or Skype voice and video calls to work. Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar block VoIP voice and video calls at the network level under Communications Regulatory Authority rules. Text messaging on these apps works. Microsoft Teams and Google Meet are licensed and function. Plan any voice calls accordingly before you travel.
Assuming there is automatic free GCC roaming. There is no GCC equivalent of EU Roam Like at Home — each Gulf operator sells its own GCC bundle as a paid option. If you arrive from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman without a bundle active, you pay standard international roaming rates.
Counting on 5G speeds to mean unlimited fair use. Qatar ranks among the fastest mobile networks in the world (Ookla Speedtest Global Index, around 520 Mbps median in 2025), but provider plans on this page typically have data caps — verify your tier covers your expected usage, especially if you stream video or upload media at full 5G speed.
Qatar has no regional roaming agreement with any country, so foreign SIMs are charged international roaming rates by default. A small number of carriers worldwide include Qatar in international bundles — check your specific plan before buying. For most international visitors, a travel eSIM is cheaper than carrier roaming beyond a 1–2 day stopover. Local Ooredoo or Vodafone SIMs are sold at airport kiosks but require passport ID and in-person registration; a travel eSIM activates on landing.
Which network is best in Qatar?
Qatar has two consumer operators: Ooredoo Qatar (dominant, 5G nationwide since 2018) and Vodafone Qatar (5G nationwide since July 2019). Both operators built out exceptional 5G coverage for the 2022 World Cup and have continued investing. For most travellers visiting Doha and the major sporting venues, both are equivalent. Ooredoo has the more extensive rural coverage across the peninsula.
Will WhatsApp and Skype work in Qatar?
WhatsApp text messaging works normally on Qatari networks. WhatsApp voice and video calls, Skype calls and FaceTime are blocked at the network level by Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar under the Communications Regulatory Authority's VoIP licensing rules. Microsoft Teams and Google Meet are licensed and function for meetings. The restriction is consistent across all travel eSIMs, since every eSIM routes through one of the two licensed Qatari operators.
