How much will it cost for your trip?
Sri Lanka is not an EU member. EU RLAH does not apply. Carrier roaming is expensive. A travel eSIM is almost always cheaper. Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are accepted at Colombo hotels, guesthouses in major tourist areas and some restaurants. Cash is useful for tuk-tuks, markets, street food, rural guesthouses and entrance fees.
Colombo, Kandy, Galle and all coastal resort areas have excellent 4G. The hill country — Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale — has good coverage in towns but variable signal on tea estate roads and hiking trails. Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) has signal at the summit on a good day but trails can be patchy at night. The Yala, Wilpattu and Udawalawe national parks have reasonable signal near the park entrances but limited coverage inside. Download offline maps before safaris and hill country hikes.

Sri Lanka has three mobile operators: Dialog Axiata (dominant, widest 4G coverage nationwide), Mobitel (solid 4G, particularly strong in the Central Province) and Hutch (budget urban operator with limited rural reach). For a typical itinerary — Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Sigiriya, Ella, Nuwara Eliya and the south coast — Dialog delivers the most consistent 4G signal. 5G is not commercially available in Sri Lanka.
For travel across multiple regions — hill country, cultural triangle, south coast — Dialog has the widest rural coverage; Hutch is not recommended outside Colombo and Kandy. On this page, Airalo routes via Dialog and Mobitel — a good fit for multi-region trips — while Roamless, Saily, aloSIM and Yesim do not confirm their Sri Lankan carrier.

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
