Antigua has reliable 4G island-wide on Digicel and Flow — St John's, English Harbour/Nelson's Dockyard, Falmouth Harbour (sailing hub), Jolly Harbour and Dickenson Bay all have coverage (APUA/iMobile, the state operator, is a third option but largely 2G). Barbuda is another matter: reached by ferry (about 1.5 hours) or light aircraft, with basic signal only in Codrington village. The lagoon, the pink sand beach and the frigate bird sanctuary are largely offline. Download offline maps and your boat or charter details in Antigua before heading to Barbuda.

Network coverage in Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda has two main mobile operators: Digicel and Flow. A third, APUA inet Mobile, offers coverage but at significantly higher prices — not a practical option for travellers. No 5G as of May 2026; 4G is the fastest available on all operators. Coverage is good across Antigua — St John’s, English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, Jolly Harbour and Dickenson Bay are all well served.

Barbuda is far more thinly covered. Codrington village has usable signal, but coverage drops away from it — the frigate bird sanctuary lagoon (reached only by boat) and the remote beaches can be weak or absent on both networks. Download offline maps before crossing from Antigua. Provider routing: Airalo connects through Digicel. Roamless, aloSIM, Saily and Yesim do not publicly disclose their carrier — in practice all connect through Digicel or Flow.

Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?

Arrival protocol in Antigua and Barbuda

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at V.C. Bird International (ANU).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
If you plan to visit Barbuda, download offline maps for Codrington, the frigate bird sanctuary and the pink-sand beach before leaving Antigua.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing at V.C. Bird International
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Digicel or Flow.
Skip the airport duty-free INET (APUA) SIM kiosk — it sells 1 GB tourist SIMs at around USD 30, materially worse value than a pre-installed eSIM or a local SIM bought in St John's.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Antigua and Barbuda

Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. Antigua and Barbuda has no regional roaming agreement, so foreign carriers apply international roaming by default — a few include it in bundles, so check your plan first.
Expecting 5G speeds. There is no commercial 5G in Antigua and Barbuda — the regulator has not auctioned 5G spectrum, so 4G/LTE on Digicel and Flow is the ceiling whatever an eSIM's marketing says.
Buying a tourist SIM at the V.C. Bird Airport duty-free kiosk. The kiosk charges far more per GB than a pre-installed travel eSIM or a Digicel/Flow SIM bought in St John's.
Counting on signal across Barbuda. Coverage in Codrington is basic and the lagoon, the pink-sand beach and the northern coast are effectively offline on every network — download offline maps in Antigua before the transfer.
