Austria is fully covered by EU Roam Like At Home, so most EU/EEA SIM plans include it at no extra charge on your home allowance. The fair-use cap is not a fixed figure: it is a regulated formula — roughly (your monthly plan price excluding VAT ÷ the wholesale cap, €1.10/GB in 2026) × 2 — and it only restricts unlimited or very low-cost plans. A standard plan with a defined data bundle usually roams up to its full domestic allowance with no separate roaming limit, and EU figures show only about 5% of roamers ever reach a cap. If you are on an unlimited plan and need heavy data (remote work, multi-device hotspot), check your operator's stated roaming limit before relying on it. Liechtenstein, despite not being in the EU, is part of the EEA and inside the same Roam Like At Home zone — no separate check needed there.
Austrian rail tickets are purchased almost entirely through the ÖBB app, with QR codes on your phone replacing paper tickets. The same applies to Vienna's Wiener Linien transit app — while paper tickets are available at machines, day passes and city-region tickets are primarily managed in-app. On mountain railways (Zahnradbahn, Schafbergbahn) and some cable cars, pre-booking via app is required in peak season. Train Wi-Fi on ÖBB Railjet and ICE services is unreliable. Save your QR code as a screenshot before boarding. Coverage on the Westbahn and Südbahn is generally good between cities; long Alpine tunnels (Arlberg, Brenner) cause intermittent drops.

Austria has three mobile operators: A1 Telekom Austria, Magenta and Drei. For Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck and Linz, all three perform well on 4G/5G. The differences emerge in the mountains: A1 has the most extensive footprint across Alpine valleys, rural Tyrol, Styria and Carinthia — Magenta and Drei are strong in cities but trail A1 in rural and remote Alpine areas.
Among the five providers on this page: Roamless routes via Drei + A1, aloSIM routes via A1 + Drei — both give you A1 access, the more reliable option for Alpine and rural areas. Airalo routes via Drei only — no A1 access, weaker outside cities and in remote mountain zones. Saily and Yesim do not disclose their Austrian carrier.
