How much will it cost for your trip?
If you have an EU SIM, Italy is covered by EU "Roam Like At Home" rules. Vatican City uses Italian mobile networks (TIM, Vodafone, WindTre) — your EU plan works identically inside St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums. San Marino is treated as part of Italy by most carriers. Only TIM provides native coverage there — Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad reach San Marino only from Italian antennas across the border, so an eSIM routing via TIM is the most reliable choice inside the republic. However, EU roaming is subject to a fair-use cap: your home plan gives a limited roaming data allowance before throttling, smaller than your full domestic allowance. If you need significant data (remote work, hotspot, heavy streaming), check your specific cap — a dedicated eSIM may be more reliable.
Italy's high-speed rail tickets (Trenitalia Frecciarossa and Italo) are purchased almost entirely through their apps, with QR codes on your phone replacing paper tickets. The same applies to skip-the-line tickets for the Vatican Museums and Colosseum — booking online is mandatory for timed entry, queues for walk-up entry can exceed 3 hours in peak season. Onboard train Wi-Fi is unreliable. Make sure you have working data when you board (eSIM or EU plan), because purchasing a last-minute ticket on the train is impractical without a connection. Coverage on Frecciarossa/Italo varies between towers and tunnels (5–30 Mbps typical); save your QR code as a screenshot before boarding.

Italy has four mobile operators: TIM (most consistent signal in difficult terrain — the Alpine interior, southern Italy and the rugged interiors of Sicily and Sardinia — per nPerf coverage maps), Vodafone Italy (strong in cities and northern Italy), WindTre (solid nationwide) and Iliad Italy (urban-focused, thinner rural reach). For Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples and the main tourist corridors, all four perform well on 4G/5G.

Italy has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
