Field tip — Travel eSIMs here all run on BTC, so coverage comes down to BTC's footprint, not the provider

Bahamas travel eSIMs effectively all route through BTC, the legacy incumbent — Airalo sells its Bahamas plans under the "Jitney Mobile" brand on BTC, and comparison listings show every single-country Bahamas eSIM on the BTC network. None give you the second operator, Aliv. The practical consequence: switching travel-eSIM brand does not change your coverage here, since they share the same underlying network. BTC has the deeper legacy reach into the Out Islands, which works in your favour — but on remote cays and uninhabited beaches no network reaches, so download offline maps and your charter or ferry details before any inter-island trip.

Network coverage in The Bahamas

The Bahamas has two mobile operators: BTC (Bahamas Telecommunications Company) and Aliv. For Nassau, Freeport and main resort areas, both deliver solid 4G. BTC is the legacy incumbent; Aliv, launched in 2016, has expanded to comparable population coverage. Outside Nassau and Freeport, coverage on the Out Islands varies by island and settlement — neither operator guarantees signal on remote beaches or uninhabited cays. Commercial 5G is not live — both operators have publicly stated nationwide 5G is not viable in the near term.

Airalo routes via BTC — its Bahamas plans are sold as “Jitney Mobile”, a BTC brand. The other four providers on this page — aloSIM, Saily, Roamless and Yesim — do not disclose which Bahamian carrier they use; all connect through BTC or Aliv, which share a roaming agreement for out-of-range coverage. For Out Islands itineraries, see the field tip above for specific coverage gaps and offline map advice.

Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?

YOUR SITUATION → USE THIS
Your carrier includes the Bahamas at a clear, affordable rate→Use roaming — no action needed
Coming from EU or UK — no EU/UK roaming agreement covers the Bahamas→eSIM is the standard choice
Coming from US / Canada — check carrier (T-Mobile often includes the Bahamas at home rates)→Check your carrier first; otherwise eSIM
Coming from Asia or another region→Check your carrier rates first — eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming
Multi-island Caribbean trip including the Bahamas→A Caribbean regional eSIM may cover the route; verify Bahamas is explicitly listed

Arrival protocol in The Bahamas

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Lynden Pindling International (NAS) or Grand Bahama International (FPO).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
If visiting Out Islands, download offline maps and any ferry / charter booking confirmations before departure.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in The Bahamas
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select BTC or Aliv.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
Local BTC or Aliv prepaid SIMs require passport ID registration and an in-person process; a travel eSIM avoids this.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in The Bahamas

Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. The Bahamas has no roaming agreement with any other country, so every foreign carrier applies international roaming charges. A few US carriers (T-Mobile in particular) include the Bahamas in their international plans — check yours before relying on it. For stays over 1–2 days, a travel eSIM is usually cheaper.
Expecting 5G. Commercial 5G is not live in The Bahamas as of 2026 — URCA is still in consultation phase and Aliv's parent Cable Bahamas warned in February 2025 that 5G is "not viable in the medium-term". Both BTC and Aliv run 4G/LTE only. Reseller marketing claims of "5G in New Providence" are not supported by URCA documentation.
Counting on signal across the Out Islands. Coverage in main settlements (George Town Exumas, Governor's Harbour Eleuthera, Marsh Harbour Abaco) is reliable. Remote beaches, sand bars, uninhabited cays and parts of the Family Islands have no signal on either operator. Download offline maps and charter contacts before any boat trip.
Buying separate eSIMs for each island. Not needed — a Bahamas eSIM covers the whole archipelago. The signal-strength variation comes from physical infrastructure, not from inter-island roaming gaps.

Common questions about eSIM in Bahamas

Do I need a travel eSIM for The Bahamas?
The Bahamas has no regional roaming agreement with any other country, so foreign SIMs are charged international roaming rates by default. A few US carriers (notably T-Mobile) include the Bahamas in their international plans — check yours before buying. For everyone else, a travel eSIM is cheaper than carrier roaming beyond a 1–2 day stopover. Local BTC or Aliv SIMs require passport ID registration; a travel eSIM activates on landing with no paperwork.
Does coverage reach the Out Islands?
Coverage is strong in Nassau (New Providence) and Freeport (Grand Bahama). Out Islands have variable 4G — main settlements and marinas on Exumas, Eleuthera, Harbour Island, Abaco, Andros and Long Island have signal on BTC and/or Aliv. Remote beaches, sand bars and uninhabited cays have no signal. Download offline maps before any island-hopping trip. BTC has the deepest legacy Out Islands footprint.
Is there 5G in The Bahamas?
No — commercial 5G is not live in The Bahamas as of 2026. URCA (Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority) released a 5G public consultation in 2023, and both BTC and Aliv have publicly stated they cannot bear the cost of nationwide rollout alone. Cable Bahamas (Aliv's parent) warned in February 2025 that 5G is "not viable in the medium-term". Both operators run 4G/LTE only.
