Field tip — China eSIM does not cover Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a separate telecommunications jurisdiction from mainland China. A China eSIM will not work in Hong Kong, and a Hong Kong eSIM will not work in mainland China. If your trip includes both, you need two separate eSIM plans or a HK+China combo plan. Note that Hong Kong has no Great Firewall restrictions — you can access Google, WhatsApp, Facebook and VPNs freely. Mainland China has the Great Firewall and requires a VPN installed before arrival.

Field tip — Octopus card covers all transport, taxis, 7-Eleven and many restaurants — more useful than cash

Hong Kong's Octopus card is a stored-value card used for MTR, buses, ferries, trams, most taxis, convenience stores and many restaurants. Buy one at the airport on arrival ($50 HKD deposit). It's almost more essential than cash for getting around. For data, any of the four Hong Kong operators deliver excellent 5G speeds. Download Google Maps offline as a backup for outlying island hiking.

Network coverage in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has four mobile operators — CMHK, HKT, 3HK and SmarTone — all operating 5G. Across Kowloon, Central, Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay and the main MTR corridors, all four perform well with 4G/5G. Differences emerge in the New Territories countryside and on the Outlying Islands, where CMHK and HKT have broader coverage, while SmarTone is regarded as the strongest inside MTR tunnels and indoors.

Among the providers on this page, Airalo routes via 3HK. aloSIM's Hong Kong carrier is reported inconsistently (CMHK or 3HK). Roamless network not confirmed. Arrival protocol in Hong Kong

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Hong Kong
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Common questions about eSIM in Hong Kong

Do I need a separate eSIM for mainland China?
Yes. Hong Kong and mainland China are separate telecommunications jurisdictions. A Hong Kong eSIM will not work in mainland China, and a China eSIM will not work in Hong Kong. If visiting both, purchase separate eSIM plans. Hong Kong has no internet restrictions — no VPN needed for standard use. Mainland China has the Great Firewall — install a VPN before entering China.
