How much will it cost for your trip?
Macau and Hong Kong are separate SAR jurisdictions with separate telecommunications. A Hong Kong eSIM will not work in Macau. If visiting both in one trip, purchase separate eSIM plans for each, or a regional plan covering both. The ferry crossing (45–60 min) uses international maritime roaming — make sure data roaming is off on your non-active SIM during the crossing.
Macau covers three main areas: the Macau Peninsula (Old City, UNESCO heritage casinos), Taipa island and the Cotai Strip (large casino resorts). All are connected by bridge and have excellent 4G/5G throughout. A 3 GB plan is typically more than enough for a 2–3 day Macau visit. Also note that Macau, like Hong Kong, has no Great Firewall — Google, Instagram and WhatsApp all work freely.

Macau has three mobile operators: CTM, Hutchison Macau and SmarTone Macau. In the Historic Centre, the Cotai Strip, Taipa and Coloane, all three deliver strong 4G/5G. The territory is small (33 km²) — coverage differences between operators are minimal for standard tourist itineraries.
Among the providers on this page, Airalo and Roamless route via CTM (4G/5G) — Macau’s dominant operator, with over a million mobile subscribers and roughly 90% outdoor 5G coverage across the territory, the first to launch 5G and the one with the widest outdoor coverage. A regional Greater China or Pearl River Delta eSIM can be more cost-effective if your trip also covers Hong Kong or the mainland.

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
