Field tip — EU roaming covers Denmark, but check your fair-use cap

Denmark is fully covered by EU Roam Like At Home rules. Most EU SIM plans include Denmark at no extra charge — you use your home data allowance as if you were in your home country. However, EU roaming fair-use caps apply: operators may throttle roaming data once you exceed a threshold (often 10–15 GB on typical plans, depending on the plan price and your home country tariff). If you need significant data — remote work, hotspot for multiple devices, heavy streaming — check your specific cap before buying a separate eSIM.

Field tip — DSB and Rejseplanen require a data connection for Danish rail and transit

Danish rail tickets are sold through the DSB app, with QR codes on your phone replacing paper — and the Rejseplanen app (journey planner) is the standard tool for all Danish public transport including regional buses and Metro. In Copenhagen, MobilePay is accepted almost universally for small purchases and some services require it. DSB InterCity trains have on-board Wi-Fi but it is unreliable on the Jutland corridor — save your ticket as a screenshot before boarding. The Great Belt crossing and Øresund Bridge have good coverage; rural Jutland halts do not.

Network coverage in Denmark

Denmark has four mobile operators: TDC (widest national coverage, dominant in rural Jutland, the West Jutland coast and on smaller islands such as Bornholm, Ærø and Samsø), Telenor (strong national challenger), Telia (reliable, particularly strong in the Copenhagen region) and 3/Hi3G (urban-focused with strong 5G in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense). For Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg, all four perform well on 4G/5G.

Arrival protocol in Denmark

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download the DSB and Rejseplanen apps before arrival — set up your account and buy rail tickets in advance for busy routes (Copenhagen–Aarhus InterCity).
Download offline maps for smaller islands and rural Jutland — signal drops on ferries and in remote areas.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Denmark
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

Denmark has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Denmark

Buying an eSIM your carrier plan already makes unnecessary. Many plans include Denmark at no extra cost — one minute in your carrier app settles it.
Choosing an eSIM for rural Jutland or island travel without checking its network. For rural Jutland, Bornholm and the smaller islands, TDC coverage makes the difference — see the network coverage block.
Not saving DSB tickets and Rejseplanen routes offline. Train tickets and transit connections are app-based — a failed connection when boarding or catching a ferry is avoidable with saved screenshots.
UK travellers assuming EU roaming applies. Post-Brexit, some UK carriers charge separately for EU countries including Denmark — check your specific plan.
