Field tip — Lake Assal and Afar desert have no signal

Djibouti City has reasonable 4G on Telecom Djibouti. Tadjoura (across the gulf) has basic coverage. Lake Assal (155m below sea level) has limited signal along the approach road. Lake Abbé's alien landscape (chimneys of steaming limestone) is very remote with no reliable coverage. The Goda Mountains (Day Forest) have variable signal. Download offline maps and route coordinates in Djibouti City before any interior excursion.

Whale sharks visit the Gulf of Tadjoura in large numbers between October and January — one of the world's most reliable whale shark snorkel experiences. Boat trips go offshore where no signal exists. Lake Abbé is reached by 4WD and takes a full day — download offline maps and emergency contacts before departure from Djibouti City. The border with Ethiopia and Eritrea areas should be approached with caution.

Djibouti Telecom (mobile brand Evatis) is the dominant — and effectively sole — operator in the country. A smaller private entrant, SOMTEL (Somcable), runs a limited network confined mainly to Djibouti City. For a typical itinerary — Djibouti City, Lake Assal, Lac Abbé, the Gulf of Tadjourah coast — Evatis provides 4G in the capital and main corridors. Rural coverage is limited; 5G is not commercially available.

Arrival protocol in Djibouti

Before departure from home
