Field tip — Safaricom leads in Masai Mara and Amboseli
Nairobi has excellent 4G/5G on Safaricom. The Masai Mara has signal at main camps and the Narok gate — bush drives can be patchy. Amboseli has signal near the Observation Hill and lodges. Mount Kenya's lower zones (Naro Moru, Chogoria) have 4G; above 3,500m coverage is limited. Lamu island has good signal in Lamu Town.
Field tip — M-Pesa is essential for Kenya — register before departure if possible, or use cash at game reserves
M-Pesa is used for park entry fees, taxis, restaurants and almost everything in Kenya. Your travel eSIM provides data but M-Pesa requires a Kenyan SIM. For park fees, keep USD or KES cash. Download offline maps for all national parks before entering — especially for self-drive safaris in Amboseli, Tsavo and the Mara.

Three major networks operate in Kenya: Safaricom, Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya. For a typical itinerary — Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani Beach, Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Naivasha — all three perform well with 4G in cities and tourist hubs, and 5G is live in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. Outside the cities, Safaricom has the widest rural and national park coverage. Airtel performs well in towns and along main highways but is less consistent in remote areas.

Arrival protocol in Kenya
Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Kenya
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.
VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid in Kenya
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.
Installing the eSIM after arrival. Activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Safaricom is Kenya's dominant operator and the best choice for nationwide coverage including the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and Samburu. Airtel Kenya is strong in Nairobi but has more limited rural coverage. Verify which carrier your travel eSIM uses before purchasing — game reserve coverage varies significantly by network.
What is M-Pesa and do I need it?
M-Pesa is Safaricom's mobile money service — Kenya's primary payment system for most daily transactions. A travel eSIM provides data only; M-Pesa requires a Kenyan SIM registered to a Kenyan number. Most tourists use a combination of USD/KES cash and cards at lodges. M-Pesa acceptance is useful for local restaurants, taxis and supermarkets.
