Egypt has 4 mobile networks: Vodafone Egypt (best overall coverage and reliability — strongest signal across Cairo-Luxor, the Nile Valley, the Red Sea coast, and remote desert areas; consensus first choice for tourists), Orange Egypt (~97% population 4G, good cities + Nile Valley + Siwa Oasis, slightly cheaper than Vodafone, less consistent in remote areas), e& Egypt (formerly Etisalat) (decent budget option, less reliable outside major cities), and WE / Telecom Egypt (newest, weakest network, not recommended for trips outside Cairo). Coverage drops noticeably off the main tourist trails: Sinai's mountainous terrain (St Catherine's Monastery and the more remote hotel zones around Sharm el-Sheikh), the Western Desert beyond Siwa, and patchy stretches on Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan. Verify which underlying network your travel eSIM routes through; Vodafone or Orange Egypt are the safest defaults.
Egyptian law requires passport presentation and registration for all local SIM cards (Vodafone, Orange, e& Egypt, WE). At Cairo International Airport, all four operators have 24-hour kiosks at the arrivals halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 next to the baggage belts; staff will take a passport copy plus the entry-stamped visa to register the SIM under your name. Avoid unofficial street vendors — SIMs not properly registered can be blocked. International travel eSIMs are exempt from this registration — they roam onto Egyptian networks via international agreements rather than being issued by Egyptian carriers, and operate without local paperwork. For short trips and arrivals at off hours (when one carrier's kiosk may be closed even though kiosks are nominally 24/7), an eSIM installed before the flight means connection within minutes of landing — useful for booking the airport Uber and navigating to a Cairo or Hurghada hotel.
Egyptian operators (Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, WE) filter Voice over IP on their mobile networks on instructions from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), in place since 2017 and still active in 2026: WhatsApp, FaceTime and Facebook Messenger voice and video calls do not connect. Text and chat messaging on the same apps is unaffected — only the call function is blocked. A travel eSIM does not change this, since providers route through the same Egyptian carriers and inherit the filtering. The data connection itself is otherwise normal. Travellers who rely on app-based calling typically use a VPN, which is legal in Egypt — install and test it before arrival, as some VPN sites are harder to reach once in-country. Otherwise, plan to keep these apps for chat only.

Four mobile networks: Vodafone Egypt (strongest overall, widest Nile Valley and Red Sea coverage), Orange Egypt (solid in cities and Nile corridor), e& Egypt (competitive in Cairo and Alexandria) and WE/Telecom Egypt (state-owned fourth operator, not recommended for travellers). For Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, all three major networks deliver reliable 4G. Commercial 5G launched across all four operators in June 2025 but is still limited and rolling out, so in practice you will mostly be on 4G.
Coverage drops in the Sinai interior (beyond resort areas), the Eastern and Western Desert, and Siwa Oasis. Vodafone has the strongest footprint outside the Nile corridor, but the eSIMs on this page do not use it: Airalo, aloSIM and Roamless route via Orange Egypt; Yesim and Saily do not disclose their carrier. You are buying Orange-grade coverage — solid in Cairo, the Nile corridor and Red Sea resorts, weaker than Vodafone in deep desert and Sinai. Egypt blocks VoIP calling — WhatsApp calls and FaceTime voice calls do not work on Egyptian networks. A VPN may restore access to these services, though Egyptian authorities have the capability to detect VPN traffic and enforcement is monitored. On public Wi-Fi (hotels, cafés, airports), a VPN also masks your traffic from the network operator. A password manager and a secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
