Field tip — Rural western highlands have variable coverage

San Salvador has excellent 4G. Main Pacific coast towns have good signal. Lago de Coatepeque, Ruta de las Flores and Santa Ana have reasonable coverage. Remote indigenous villages and the northern highlands near the Honduran border can have limited signal. Download offline maps before any rural western highland excursion.

Network coverage in El Salvador

El Salvador has three main mobile operators — Tigo (widest, most consistent national 4G including rural and coastal areas), Claro (a very close second, strong nationwide) and Movistar (solid urban, weaker rural) — plus Digicel, a small fourth network still largely on 3G and not recommended for travel. 5G is barely present: only Tigo has an early presence in San Salvador, so expect 4G across the country.

For the Pacific coast (El Tunco, El Zonte, La Libertad), the Ruta de las Flores, Lago de Coatepeque and Santa Ana, Tigo is the most reliable choice. The northern highlands near the Honduran border and remote indigenous villages can have limited coverage on any network. Provider routing on this page: aloSIM routes via Tigo and Claro; Airalo (Cerrocom plan) via Movistar at 4G. Saily, Roamless and Yesim do not publicly disclose their Salvadoran carrier.

Arrival protocol in El Salvador

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at San Salvador (SAL).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps — useful for Ruta de las Flores, northern highlands and remote Pacific surf points.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in El Salvador
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Tigo or Claro.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in El Salvador

Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges; El Salvador has no regional roaming agreement so most foreign SIMs are billed at international rates.
Choosing an eSIM that does not route via Tigo for a coast or rural trip. Tigo has the most reliable signal on the Pacific surf corridor, the Ruta de las Flores and the northern highlands. Claro and Movistar drop sharply outside San Salvador and main urban centres.
Buying an eSIM when home roaming is already favourable. If your carrier includes El Salvador at a clear rate, use it. Verify before buying.
Not downloading offline maps for rural areas. The northern highlands near the Honduran border and remote indigenous villages can have limited signal on any network.
