Field tip — Bay Islands resort areas have good coverage

Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula have good 4G. The Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja) — popular dive destinations — have reasonable coverage in main towns and resort areas. Interior Honduras (Copán ruins, Pico Bonito National Park) has variable coverage — Copán Ruinas town has signal, the ruins site less so. Rural and border areas have limited coverage.

Network coverage in Honduras

Two operators dominate Honduras: Tigo (strong rural footprint including the Bay Islands) and Claro (strong in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and main urban centres). State operator Hondutel has minimal mobile coverage. No commercial 5G has launched in Honduras.

Among the providers on this page, Airalo routes via Tigo (4G); aloSIM routes via Tigo and Claro. Saily, Roamless and Yesim do not disclose their Honduran carrier. For specific coverage on the Bay Islands, Copán and rural areas, see the field tip above. Travel eSIM providers on this page route via Tigo or Claro — check the carrier listed on each provider card.

Arrival protocol in Honduras

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Toncontín (TGU), San Pedro Sula (SAP) or Roatán (RTB).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps — useful for Copán ruins, Pico Bonito and dive site navigation in the Bay Islands.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Honduras
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Tigo or Claro.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Honduras

Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges; Honduras has no regional roaming agreement so most foreign SIMs are billed at international rates.
Choosing an eSIM that does not route via Tigo for Bay Islands or rural mainland. Tigo has the widest reach into Roatán, Utila, Guanaja and rural mainland routes. Claro and Movistar drop sharply outside Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and main urban centres.
Expecting signal offshore. Diving and snorkelling sites have no coverage on any network. Download dive site maps and navigation while ashore.
Buying an eSIM when home roaming is already favourable. If your carrier includes Honduras at a clear rate, use it. Verify before buying.

Yes. Roatán has good 4G coverage in West End, West Bay and Coxen Hole. Utila has basic coverage in Utila Town. Guanaja has limited coverage. Diving and snorkelling sites offshore have no mobile signal — download dive site maps and underwater navigation guides while ashore.
