Field tip — Tikal and highland roads have variable signal

Guatemala City and Antigua have strong 4G. Lake Atitlán towns (Panajachel, San Pedro, San Marcos) have decent coverage. Chichicastenango market area has signal. Tikal National Park has very limited coverage at the entrance but the ruins and jungle interior have no signal. Semuc Champey, the highland roads of Huehuetenango and the Alta Verapaz region have patchy coverage.

Network coverage in Guatemala

Three operators run Guatemala: Tigo (strong rural footprint, including Lake Atitlán, the Western Highlands and the Petén), Claro (strong in Guatemala City, Antigua, Quetzaltenango and main tourist towns) and Movistar (solid urban, weaker rural). 5G is limited to Guatemala City metro; the rest of the country runs 4G.

For Lake Atitlán towns (Panajachel, San Pedro, San Marcos), Tigo and Claro both cover the main lakeside. Among the providers on this page, Airalo routes via both Tigo and Claro, while aloSIM routes via Claro. Saily, Roamless and Yesim do not disclose their Guatemalan carrier. For specific dead zones at Tikal, Semuc Champey and highland roads, see the field tip above.

Arrival protocol in Guatemala

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at La Aurora (GUA) or Flores Mundo Maya (FRS).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps — essential for Tikal, Semuc Champey, the Western Highlands and any back-country drive.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Guatemala
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Tigo or Claro.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Guatemala

Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges; Guatemala has no regional roaming agreement so most foreign SIMs are billed at international rates.
Choosing an eSIM that does not route via Tigo for highland or Petén routes. Tigo has the widest reach into the Western Highlands, the Petén corridor toward Tikal and the Alta Verapaz region. Claro and Movistar drop sharply outside Guatemala City, Antigua and main tourist towns.
Expecting signal inside Tikal. The park entrance has coverage; the ruins and jungle interior have none on any network. Download offline maps and trail info before visiting.
Buying an eSIM when home roaming is already favourable. If your carrier includes Guatemala at a clear rate, use it. Verify before buying.
