Best eSIM for Hungary

EU Roam Like At Home rules apply in Hungary, but your carrier's fair use cap may limit how much data you can roam. For a short Budapest weekend, your EU SIM will likely cover you. For longer stays or heavier use, a travel eSIM is more predictable. If you want a local SIM instead, all three Hungarian operators (Magyar Telekom, Yettel, One) require passport registration — a 20–30 minute in-store process. Magyar Telekom runs a counter on the arrivals level of Terminal 2B that sells Travel SIMs against passport or ID; the other operators sell through their city stores. A travel eSIM activated before departure avoids the registration process entirely.

Hungary is in the EU but has not adopted the Euro. The currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Some tourist-facing venues in Budapest's city centre accept Euros, but at poor exchange rates. When paying by card, always choose HUF at the terminal to avoid dynamic currency conversion fees. ATMs (bankautomata) are widely available in Budapest and major cities. Outside Budapest — smaller towns, rural areas, village restaurants and local markets — cash in Forint is commonly expected.
