Field tip — Remote islands have very limited coverage
Java (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya), Bali and Lombok have excellent 4G/5G on Telkomsel. Sulawesi (Makassar, Manado) has good coverage. Sumatra (Medan, Padang) has solid 4G in cities. Raja Ampat (Papua) — one of the world's top dive destinations — has very limited signal; most liveaboards and remote homestays use satellite. Komodo island has basic coverage at Labuan Bajo. Kalimantan interior (Borneo) has no signal in most areas.

Telkomsel has the widest nationwide coverage and is the recommended network for multi-island travel. For Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bali, any provider works excellently. For Sulawesi's Togian Islands, the Banda Sea, Raja Ampat and any liveaboard diving trip, prepare for complete offline conditions. Download offline maps (Maps.me has excellent Indonesia offline coverage including village-level detail), boat schedules and accommodation contacts before each island hop.

Three major networks operate in Indonesia: Telkomsel (widest island coverage), XLSmart (competitive in Java, Bali and Lombok) and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (strong in major cities). For Java (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya), Bali, Lombok and main tourist areas, all three perform well on 4G/5G. Coverage varies significantly by island — see the field tip above for specific remote areas.
Airalo runs on Indosat and Three (Hutchison) — not Telkomsel — while aloSIM runs on Telkomsel. Saily, Roamless and Yesim do not disclose their Indonesian carrier. For Java, Bali and Lombok any of them performs well; for remote islands (Komodo, Raja Ampat, Nusa Penida), Telkomsel holds signal best — so aloSIM is the more reliable choice there, while Airalo weakens away from the tourist corridor.

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps for all islands and regions you plan to visit.
For smaller islands and remote areas (Lombok, Flores, Komodo, Raja Ampat, Togian): download all ferry schedules, dive site guides and accommodation addresses offline before leaving Java or Bali.

Confirm access to your banking app from your travel device.
After landing in Indonesia
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Open your offline map — useful immediately after landing, especially in Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali) or Surabaya traffic.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid in Indonesia
Not downloading island maps offline. On Lombok, Flores, Komodo and Raja Ampat, there is often no signal in remote areas. Download everything before the ferry.
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will use it if active.
Relying only on the cloud for accommodation details. Keep addresses and booking confirmations offline.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.
Which network is best for multi-island Indonesia travel?
Indonesia has three main operators: Telkomsel (dominant — widest coverage across all inhabited islands including remote eastern Indonesia), Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (strong in Java, Bali and cities) and XLSmart (formed April 2025 from the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren; solid in urban areas). For multi-island itineraries beyond Java and Bali, Telkomsel has the most reliable coverage on lesser-visited islands.
Do I need a local Indonesian SIM, or is a travel eSIM enough?
For most travellers, a travel eSIM is enough — international travel eSIMs are exempt from Indonesia's local IMEI registration requirement, which a tourist buying a Telkomsel SIM at the airport would face. The trade-off: travel eSIMs route via Telkomsel, XLSmart or Indosat/Three depending on the provider, so for outer-island itineraries (Sulawesi, Flores, Raja Ampat) confirm which network the eSIM uses before purchase.
