Field tip — UK SIMs post-Brexit: check Ireland carrier terms

EU Roam Like At Home covers SIMs from the EU and the EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) in Ireland; UK SIMs have not been covered since Brexit. If you have a UK SIM (post-Brexit) (EE, Vodafone UK, O2, Three UK), check your carrier's specific Ireland roaming rate — some UK carriers include Ireland in their roaming packages, others charge extra. Rates and inclusions vary significantly between carriers and plans. A travel eSIM eliminates any uncertainty about roaming charges for Irish data.

Field tip — Download offline maps before the Wild Atlantic Way and remote coastal routes

Coverage is reliable in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and along most main roads. Along the Wild Atlantic Way, signal is generally good at towns and major viewpoints, but remote cliff paths, mountain passes and offshore island ferries can have dead zones. The Aran Islands have limited and unreliable signal. The Skellig coast in Kerry, the Beara Peninsula and some stretches of the Connemara coast are also patchy. Download offline maps before leaving any town on a coastal or mountain route. Google Maps, Organic Maps and Maps.me all work well offline for Irish driving and hiking routes.

Network coverage in Ireland

Ireland has three mobile operators: Three Ireland (strong coastal and urban coverage, reliable along the Wild Atlantic Way and in Galway, Cork and Dublin), Eir (incumbent, excellent rural and inland coverage, particularly strong in smaller towns and inland counties) and Vodafone Ireland (strong urban coverage, reliable across all main tourist routes). All three operators run 5G, now widespread across cities and tourist areas.

Arrival protocol in Ireland

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Install the eSIM at home — Dublin Airport has Wi-Fi but home activation is faster.
Download offline maps for Wild Atlantic Way and remote coastal routes before departure.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Ireland

Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
If crossing into Northern Ireland, check your eSIM provider's UK coverage terms.

VPN, passwords and documents

Ireland has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Ireland

Buying an eSIM your carrier plan already makes unnecessary. Many plans include Ireland at no extra cost — one minute in your carrier app settles it.
Not downloading offline maps before remote coastal routes. The Wild Atlantic Way, Ring of Kerry, Aran Islands and Connemara coast all have signal gaps — download in Dublin, Galway or Cork before heading out.
Assuming a UK plan still gets EU roaming in Ireland. Post-Brexit, EU Roam Like at Home no longer covers UK SIMs — some UK carriers include Ireland in their packages, many do not.
Crossing into Northern Ireland without checking coverage. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so an Ireland eSIM may not cover it — check your provider's UK coverage before crossing the border.
