EU Roam Like At Home rules apply to EU SIM cards in Ireland, but UK/EEA SIM cards are not covered by EU RLAH since Brexit. If you have a UK SIM (post-Brexit) (EE, Vodafone UK, O2, Three UK), check your carrier's specific Ireland roaming rate — some UK carriers include Ireland in their roaming packages, others charge extra. Rates and inclusions vary significantly between carriers and plans. A travel eSIM eliminates any uncertainty about roaming charges for Irish data.

Coverage is reliable in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and along most main roads. Along the Wild Atlantic Way, signal is generally good at towns and major viewpoints, but remote cliff paths, mountain passes and offshore island ferries can have dead zones. The Aran Islands have limited and unreliable signal. The Skellig coast in Kerry, the Beara Peninsula and some stretches of the Connemara coast are also patchy. Download offline maps before leaving any town on a coastal or mountain route. Google Maps, Organic Maps and Maps.me all work well offline for Irish driving and hiking routes.

All three operators run 5G, now widespread across cities and tourist areas.

Ireland has no internet restrictions — a VPN is not required for standard use. On hotel or pub Wi-Fi, a VPN is useful for banking or work accounts. Ireland uses the Euro and cards are accepted almost universally. Keep a secure backup of your passport, insurance and accommodation bookings.

Not downloading offline maps before remote coastal routes. The Wild Atlantic Way, Ring of Kerry, Aran Islands and Connemara coast all have signal gaps. Download in Dublin, Galway or Cork before heading out.
Assuming coverage is identical across providers on remote routes. On the Wild Atlantic Way and in rural West Ireland, multi-network access (Three + Eir + Vodafone) provides better redundancy than a single-network plan. Airalo is the only provider on this page confirmed to route via all three Irish networks.
Crossing into Northern Ireland without checking coverage. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, not the Republic of Ireland. Your Irish eSIM plan may not cover Northern Ireland — check your provider's UK coverage before crossing the border.
