Best eSIM for the UK
The UK is outside EU roaming — EU Roam Like at Home does not apply post-Brexit. For most visitors, a travel eSIM is the straightforward option; network choice matters if your itinerary includes rural Scotland or Wales.

How much will it cost for your trip?
Since Brexit, the UK is no longer covered by EU "Roam Like At Home" rules, and policies vary by carrier in both directions. If you are travelling from the EU to the UK: many EU carriers still include the UK in their roaming pass (Free Mobile FR, O2 Lux, Lyca, etc.) — others do not. Open your carrier app and verify before assuming. If you are travelling from the UK to the EU: O2 includes EU roaming on every plan with no add-on; Three includes it on Inclusive Roaming plans (or £2/day otherwise); EE and Vodafone typically require a £2–5/day add-on with a 50 GB fair-use cap. One quick check of your specific plan often shows you do not need a separate eSIM at all.
The Vodafone UK + Three UK merger completed in May 2025, reducing the UK from four to three main network groups: EE (owned by BT — widest coverage, including ~99% population, strongest in rural Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), VodafoneThree (combined infrastructure since 2025, strong in cities), and VMO2 (Virgin Media O2 — solid nationwide, good in Highlands and Wales via shared masts). Travel eSIM providers have not all updated their network listings to reflect the merger — Roamless still lists Vodafone and Three as separate entries on its UK page. For practical purposes: if rural Scotland, Welsh countryside, or Northern Ireland are on your itinerary, an EE-based eSIM (Airalo or aloSIM) will give you the most reliable signal. For London, Manchester or Edinburgh city trips, any provider performs well.

Network coverage in the UK
The UK has three main network groups: EE (BT), VodafoneThree (the merged Vodafone and Three) and Virgin Media O2. On 4G, Ofcom's 2025 data now puts every operator at roughly 90% of UK landmass — the Shared Rural Network has largely closed the old gap. EE keeps the edge where it counts off the beaten track: the widest 5G geographic footprint, the most Shared-Rural-Network sites, and the most reliable real-world signal in the Scottish Highlands and rural Wales. Three remains the weakest in those remote areas. In cities and along motorways, all of them perform well on 4G/5G.
On this page, Airalo and aloSIM both run on EE (aloSIM adds Three), making them the safest picks for the Highlands and deep rural Wales. Roamless uses Vodafone, O2 and Three and auto-switches between them — resilient in cities and most rural areas, but without EE it is less ideal for the remotest Highlands. VPN, passwords and documents
The UK has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
