Field tip — Check your EU/EEA fair-use policy

EU Roam Like at Home rules apply in Latvia. For a Riga city break or a Baltic coastal drive, your EU SIM will easily cover you within the FUP. For longer stays, digital-nomad usage or heavy streaming, check your carrier's FUP cap and any extra-charge threshold above which roaming becomes billed.

Field tip — Download offline maps for Gauja National Park and forest trails

Coverage is strong throughout Riga, Jūrmala and along all major roads. In Gauja National Park — Sigulda, Cēsis, Valmiera — signal is generally good in towns but can drop in deep forest valleys. Download offline maps before hiking the Gauja Valley trails or cycling routes along the Lielupe and Daugava rivers. The Kurzeme coast and Cape Kolka nature reserve can have patchy signal.

Network coverage in Latvia

Three mobile operators serve Latvia: LMT (incumbent, widest rural and forested coverage), Tele2 Latvia (strong urban and main-roads) and Bite Latvia (mainly urban, smallest of the three). 4G is comprehensive nationwide; 5G is rolling out across Riga, Jūrmala and major towns. For Riga, Jūrmala, Sigulda and main roads, all three operators perform well.

Among the providers on this page, Airalo routes via Tele2 and LMT. Roamless routes via LMT, Tele2 and Bite. aloSIM, Saily and Yesim do not disclose their Latvian carrier. For specific dead zones in Gauja National Park, the Kurzeme coast and forest trails, see the field tip above.

VPN, passwords and documents

Latvia has no internet restrictions — a VPN is not required for standard use. On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN is useful for banking or work. Latvia uses the Euro (joined Eurozone 2014). Keep a secure backup of your passport and accommodation bookings.

Mistakes to avoid in Latvia

Buying an eSIM without checking your home carrier first. If you have an EU SIM, Roam Like at Home applies in Latvia and a travel eSIM may be unnecessary.
Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges if your carrier is not on EU RLAH.
Taking too small a plan for a long stay. Riga is a popular digital-nomad base; map and messaging data add up over weeks.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.

Common questions about eSIM in Latvia

Do EU roaming rules apply in Latvia?
Yes. Latvia is an EU member, so EU Roam Like at Home applies to EU/EEA SIM cards. You can use an EU/EEA SIM in Latvia at no extra charge, subject to your carrier's fair-use policy. Latvia joined the Eurozone in 2014. Non-EU visitors face standard international roaming and typically find a travel eSIM cheaper for anything beyond a 1–2 day stopover.
Which network is best for travel in Latvia?
Latvia has three mobile operators: LMT (Latvijas Mobilais Telefons — incumbent, ~40% market share, widest rural and forested coverage), Tele2 Latvia (largest active-SIM base per SPRK February 2024, strong urban and main-roads footprint) and Bite Latvia (mainly urban, sharing infrastructure with Tele2 since 2019). All three deliver excellent coverage in Riga and Jūrmala. For Gauja National Park, the Kurzeme coast and rural eastern Latvia, LMT has the strongest historical footprint.
