Liechtenstein is covered by EU Roam Like at Home as an EEA member — but only when your phone connects to a Liechtenstein network. Near the Swiss border, phones can silently switch to a Swiss operator, which sits outside the roaming zone and triggers charges.

Field tip — Watch the Swiss network trap in Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is in the EEA, so EU Roam Like at Home applies to EU/EEA SIM holders since 15 June 2017 (EFTA / EU Commission). The trap is geographic: Swisscom and Salt operate physical networks on both sides of the border, and your phone can silently latch onto a Swiss antenna (mobile country code 228) instead of a Liechtenstein antenna (MCC 295). Switzerland is not in the EEA, so Swiss-network connections trigger Swiss roaming rates regardless of your SIM origin. Telecom Liechtenstein (FL1) operates only inside Liechtenstein — connecting there is the safest signal of being on EEA territory.
Field tip — One eSIM can cover Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria
Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in Europe — a standard road trip through Vaduz, Balzers and Malbun takes less than an hour. Coverage is strong throughout, supported by Swiss network infrastructure. The alpine ski area of Malbun has good 4G signal in the village itself but expect gaps on higher mountain trails. Many visitors combine Liechtenstein with Switzerland or Austria — check your eSIM provider covers all three countries if needed.
Coverage notes cross-referenced from multiple independent sources.
Prepaid tiers (1–30 GB, 30-day validity) and unlimited tiers. The 30 GB/30-day tier works out to $1.00/GB. 7-day unlimited at $28.80. Carrier not disclosed.
Three mobile operators serve Liechtenstein: Telecom Liechtenstein (FL1) (incumbent, operates only within Liechtenstein), Swisscom Liechtenstein and 7acht (run by Salt). All three offer near-100% 4G coverage across the country’s 160 km² territory; 5G is available on FL1. Liechtenstein is in the EEA — EU Roam Like at Home applies for EU/EEA SIM holders. Note: Swisscom and 7acht also operate in Switzerland. Your phone can silently connect to a Swiss antenna instead of a Liechtenstein one — Switzerland is not in the EEA, which triggers Swiss roaming rates. See the field tip above for how to avoid this.
Among the providers on this page, Airalo and Roamless route via Telecom Liechtenstein (FL1) and Salt (4G/5G). For specific dead zones on alpine trails above Malbun, see the field tip above.
Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?
YOUR SITUATION → USE THIS
Your carrier already includes Liechtenstein at a clear, affordable rate→Use roaming — verify on FL1 (MCC 295)
Coming from EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway)→Use EU/EEA roaming — but watch the Swiss network trap
Coming from Switzerland with a Swisscom or Salt SIM→Free roaming in Liechtenstein — no eSIM needed
Coming from UK — varies by carrier (most exclude Liechtenstein from EU pass)→Check your carrier first
Coming from US / Canada / Australia / NZ — carrier charges per-day→eSIM cheaper for stays over 2 days
Coming from another region→Check your carrier rates first — eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming
Arrival protocol in Liechtenstein
Before departure from home
Check your carrier's Liechtenstein roaming terms — EU RLAH does not automatically apply in Liechtenstein.
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM at home before departure.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Liechtenstein
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load — toggle airplane mode if nothing connects.
VPN, passwords and documents
Liechtenstein has no internet restrictions — a VPN is not required for standard use. On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN is useful for banking or work. Liechtenstein uses the Swiss Franc (CHF), not the Euro. Keep a secure backup of your passport and accommodation bookings.
Mistakes to avoid in Liechtenstein
Assuming EU RLAH does not apply because Liechtenstein is not in the EU. Liechtenstein is in the EEA, and RLAH has covered all EEA countries since 15 June 2017.
Letting your phone silently roam onto a Swiss network at the border. Swisscom and Salt operate on both sides; if your phone connects to MCC 228 (Switzerland) instead of MCC 295 (Liechtenstein), Switzerland is not in the EEA and Swiss roaming rates apply regardless of your SIM origin.
Buying a Swiss prepaid SIM in Liechtenstein expecting EEA rates. Local Liechtenstein prepaid SIMs are treated as Swiss (non-EEA) for outbound roaming — they will not give you free roaming when you cross into EU countries.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.
Yes. Liechtenstein is in the European Economic Area, and EU Roam Like at Home has applied to all EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) since 15 June 2017 (EFTA Joint Committee / European Commission). EU and EEA SIM holders use their domestic plan in Liechtenstein at home rates, subject to their carrier's fair-use policy. The catch: phones can silently roam onto Swiss networks (MCC 228) at the border — Switzerland is not in the EEA, so those connections trigger Swiss roaming rates. Connect to a Liechtenstein network (MCC 295) or to FL1 specifically, which operates only inside Liechtenstein.
Which network is best for travel in Liechtenstein?
Liechtenstein has three mobile operators with infrastructure on its soil: Telecom Liechtenstein (FL1, incumbent, ~60% share, only inside Liechtenstein), Swisscom Liechtenstein and 7acht (Salt Mobile's Liechtenstein arm). All three deliver near-100% 4G coverage. FL1 is the safest choice for an EEA SIM holder, since connecting to FL1 guarantees a Liechtenstein (MCC 295) network and EU RLAH coverage. Travel eSIMs routing via FL1 or a Swiss partner with explicit Liechtenstein coverage deliver solid signal throughout.
