How much will it cost for your trip?
Lilongwe and Blantyre have good 4G on Airtel. Lake Malawi resort areas — Cape Maclear (Nkhata Bay), Nkhata Bay, Senga Bay — have reasonable coverage in the towns. Cape Maclear (Lake Malawi National Park, UNESCO) has basic signal at the main beach. Liwonde National Park (excellent for wildlife safaris — elephants, hippos, crocodiles, birds) has limited coverage at the main camp. The Mulanje Massif and Nyika Plateau have very limited signal.
Lake Malawi has extraordinary cichlid fish diversity — snorkelling and kayaking around Cape Maclear is world-class. Download offline fish identification guides and park maps before any lake excursion. Liwonde National Park boat safaris along the Shire River are excellent for hippos and birds — download wildlife guides in Liwonde town before entering.

Malawi has two established mobile operators: Airtel Malawi (current market leader, widest 4G coverage) and TNM (Telekom Networks Malawi, strong in urban areas). For Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba, Cape Maclear and Monkey Bay on Lake Malawi, both operators provide reliable 4G. 5G is now live in Lilongwe, Blantyre and several other cities — TNM since July 2025 and Airtel since November 2025 — though most travel eSIMs still connect on 4G.
Coverage drops significantly in the northern Nyika Plateau, the Vwaza Marsh and remote lakeshore areas, where Airtel has the wider rural footprint. Airalo routes via Airtel Malawi. Roamless, Saily, aloSIM and Yesim each route via Airtel or TNM but do not publicly disclose which — for committed off-road itineraries, a local Airtel SIM is the most reliable choice.

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road.
