Field tip — Moldova is not EU — roaming charges apply

Moldova is an EU candidate country but is not an EU member. EU Roam Like At Home rules do not apply. Most EU carriers charge daily fees for Moldova. Moldova uses the Moldovan Leu (MDL) — not Euro. Cash in Lei is commonly needed outside Chișinău, especially in rural Moldova and wine region cellars. Cards are widely accepted in the capital.

Field tip — Note Transnistria status: the breakaway region operates independently of Moldova telecom

The Transnistrian region (Pridnestrovie) operates a de facto separate state with its own mobile infrastructure. Standard Moldova eSIMs may not work in Transnistria, or may incur international charges. If your itinerary includes Tiraspol or the Transnistrian corridor, verify coverage with your provider before crossing the de facto border. For Chișinău, Orheiul Vechi, and the Codru wine region, coverage is reliable on Orange Moldova.

Network coverage in Moldova

Moldova has three mobile operators: Orange Moldova, Moldcell, and Moldtelecom. For Chişinău, Orheiul Vechi, and the vineyard region, 4G is reliable on all three. 5G is now live on Orange and Moldcell but still limited to Chişinău and a few other zones. Orange and Moldcell lead on 4G speed and consistency; Moldtelecom is gaining ground.

On this page, aloSIM routes via Orange Moldova; Yesim and Saily do not disclose their Moldovan carrier — all give reliable 4G across the country, with 5G only in central Chişinău. For Transnistria, which Moldovan operators do not serve in practice, see the field tip above.
