Field tip — Check government travel advisories

As of 2026, Ukraine remains in an active war zone. Most Western governments advise against all travel to Ukraine, or restrict advice to essential travel in certain western regions. Even western Ukraine (Lviv, Carpathians) is subject to air raid alerts and periodic strikes. If you do travel to Ukraine, register with your embassy, download offline maps before arrival, keep your phone charged, and sign up for official alert systems. EU RLAH does not apply — a travel eSIM gives predictable data cost.

Field tip — Western Ukraine has functioning 4G; download offline maps and Ukrainian emergency alert apps

Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Uzhhorod have reliable 4G on all three operators. Central Ukraine (Kyiv) has functioning mobile infrastructure but is regularly subject to air raids — check current safety conditions before travelling there. Eastern and southern regions have severely disrupted or destroyed mobile infrastructure. Download offline maps (Organic Maps works well for Ukrainian cities), and install the Повітряна тривога (Air Raid Alert) app if operating in any Ukrainian territory.

Network coverage in Ukraine

Ukraine has three mobile operators: Kyivstar (market leader, widest rural reach), Vodafone Ukraine (strong urban coverage) and lifecell. For accessible destinations — Lviv and Kyiv — 4G from all three is reliable. No commercial 5G is available for travellers; a pilot zone launched in Lviv in early 2026 is ongoing. All three operators run national roaming with each other — subscribers can connect to a competing network when their home network is unavailable.

On this page, Airalo routes via Kyivstar — the operator with the widest rural reach — while Yesim does not disclose its carrier; with the shared national roaming, the carrier matters less here than in most countries. Infrastructure damage from ongoing military operations has affected coverage in eastern and southern Ukraine; regions near active front lines should be treated as no-coverage zones for planning purposes.

For current regional conditions, offline map recommendations and emergency alert apps, see the field tips above.

Arrival protocol in Ukraine

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Ukraine
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

Ukraine has no general internet restrictions for standard use, but mobile infrastructure is disrupted in conflict zones. On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN is useful for banking or work. Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH) — not Euro. Keep a secure backup of your passport and accommodation bookings.

Mistakes to avoid in Ukraine

Leaving data roaming on your home SIM. Background apps will generate charges.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately. Check settings first.
Installing the eSIM after arrival. Activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.

Common questions about eSIM in Ukraine

Which network is best for Ukraine?
Ukraine has three operators: Kyivstar (largest, widest 4G coverage across Ukraine including western regions), Vodafone Ukraine (strong in cities) and lifecell (solid urban). For western Ukraine travel — Lviv, Carpathian highlands, Uzhhorod — Kyivstar has the most extensive regional coverage.
